So what did you do with your truck today?

My response to ALL the politicians to EVERYTHING they propose is: "You go first. Lead by example." "Give up your _______________, and then maybe I'll give up mine." Fill in the blank. Fossil fuel, big house, vacation, dinner with family, privacy, gun, opinion, whatever. They won't do it. I'll...

So what did you do with your truck today?

Agreed! Fix it. Learn it. Trust it and yourself. Screw the dealerships and all the crap they sell that is designed to break down. It won't be the mechanical stuff the breaks the bank. It'll be the electronic controls that, after 10 years, you won't be able to get parts for.

    What oil do you use?

Look at the API rating. American Petroleum Institute has standards that, like grades of meat and eggs, pretty much tell if the oil is any good. Very few companies refine their oils. Regardless of the brand name. If it has an SN Plus rating, it's the best grade. I used to be a brand name snob...

    Coolant Flush Procedure

yep, 4 gallons of distilled water and then 4 gallons of Fleet Charge. I checked it today after reading about 'burping' the system and low and behold, I added another gallon of distilled water to fill the radiator back up. Two things. 1. I live in central Texas so I really don't have to much...

    Coolant Flush Procedure

I just switched coolant from green to Fleet Charge. I didn't know if there was any DCA in the coolant. The test strips were damn near half the price of the new coolant, so I just flushed the system 5 times with distilled water then put in 4 gallons of Fleet Charge, which filled it up. My...

Another coolant question (search revealed nothing)

I'm a little late to the thread. What did you do? Usually, 1 day is not long enough for a pH test. IMHO. It takes a while to balance out. At least in my experience with chemistry.

Don't worry about the rim, It'll be ok. Those dually rims are pretty stout. You probably didn't even nick the paint. :Thumbs Up. I hope your hand gets better, too.

So what did you do with your truck today?

Decided to replace the two part fuel filter with a one piece. WELL, the bottom cap was tight, the filter was tight. I found my two favorite tools for getting that old POS off. A spanner and a strap wrench. I put a plastic sheet under the old filter before I broke it loose. I caught the diesel...

    heater hoses

I'm just spit balling, but it could have been used for an auxiliary heater. Maybe a camper in the back? Maybe it was a radiator style that was for a different configuration of vehicle and they just needed a few radiators to finish a production run so some low level manager made an executive...

Very nice! '89 IDI!!! I'm loving mine. I think I might has to work on the tranny, though. It slips when I first start it up. Once it warms up it runs fine. Have you ever experienced this? I like the green color. I would like get a 4x4, but the dually works for me here in Texas. BTW, Do you...

What a clean truck!!! Very nice. You found the right forum. These folks here have helped me out a bunch, as I am new to the oil burner family. There is just something about fixing things yourself that is very rewarding. People now-a-days just don't get it.

What kind of lights are those small square ones on the lower front bumper? I would like to mount some on the side of my rig for ditch lights.

89 cab and chassis (F35?) that was an ambulance at an oil refinery, then a Texas Search and Rescue vehicle. Now, she's ours. We call her "Black Betty Bambalance" after the song of ABOUT the same name (Orleans?). I guess that would get me in trouble with the "Woke" crowd as it's not very...

    Holey water

See that water? Will changing out that gasket on the cowling get rid of it? I plan on ordering a new gasket but only want to pay for shipping once. Is there anything or anywhere else that would be causing that? I don't think getting water down the throat of that IDI would be a good thing.

Cetane Booster beneficial in a 7.3 idi?

I can't say anything about the others, but Stanadyne worked wonders in my '89 idi. I was never much for miracle results that came from a can, but day-amm, that stuff worked fast and now it is running great. As far as mileage being increased, I haven't got good numbers yet. I plan on using it in...

    What is this?

I'm just spit balling, but it sure looks like the cruise control works via vacuum and as such I would first do a check of the vacuum system.

    What is this?

Thanks, guys! I was too lazy (Old and Fat, and sweaty, actually) to climb around that hot compartment and trace it out. This forum sure brings out the "Screw it, I'll just post it" in me, at times. I WAS tracing the vacuum lines to try and find out why my heater wasn't working and the Mrs. asked...

So what did you do with your truck today?

I started tracking down a phantom battery draw. Not sexy like a new turbo or anything. I found a relay that was energized with both battery disconnect switches off. I pulled the inline fuse near the relay and everything still worked as it should when I started the truck up. It's an old ambulance...

    6.9 motorhome giving new grief

Stanadyne fuel additive did wonders for my '89 7.3 IDI. Not that the other stuff is worse, but it was recommended on this forum. I dumped about a quart of it in each tank. Ran it for about 30 minutes and it was like a new truck. It's about $40 a jug at Autozone, but it says it will treat...
