7.3 IDI Block Deck Flatness / Trueness Spec

Thank y'all very much for the feedback! It is appreciated. That .003" spec seems more like it. I bought the OEM tool machinist straight edge from bulletpruf's video to check mine. Fantastic video btw! So, I have already purchased .010" reduced height pistons and have had my cylinders and rods...

7.3 IDI Block Deck Flatness / Trueness Spec

I may have just found it.. This is from my 6.9 manual and I am thinking it would apply to my 7.3 as well. Would this be correct? Thanks!

7.3 IDI Block Deck Flatness / Trueness Spec

I have been looking all through my service manual and cannot find the Block Deck Flatness spec anywhere. Can anyone provide me what the max clearance should be when checking with a straight edge? I am trying to determine if my deck is acceptable or if I need to resurface it. Any help is appreciated.

@IDIBRONCO When you say that, are you talking about like claying the tops of the pistons to see what the valve gap is to piston?

    Best Suppliers Site?

This is likely exactly where that "$100" is from, to purchase replacement parts for his damaged ones from shipping. CDD does clearly provide requirements for how to send cores in and stripping is part of that. Shout out to CDD and R&D as Joe and Justin have been unbelievably helpful with my...

7.3 IDI Thicker Head Gasket Source other than Fel-Pro

Update: Thicker head gaskets other than fel-pro just do not exist for the IDI. Unfortunately, my salvage yard block had a single flanged sleeve bored to .040 over in Cyl #8. Opted not to use it. After carefully inspecting the "ruined block", I made a plan on paper as seen below. I believe the...

As some of you may have seen in this thread (https://www.oilburners.net/threads/7-3-idi-thicker-head-gasket-source-other-than-fel-pro.94455/page-2), I had a major set back. I won't repeat everything here as you can go see it in the thread but short, my machinist went crazy with a file and ruined...

7.3 IDI Thicker Head Gasket Source other than Fel-Pro

One more thing I wanted to note was it appears the MAHLE head gasket is .007" thicker than Fel-Pro's?? Is this right? .007" would go a long ways in my case.. EDIT: just measured my fel-Pro gasket and it measures .073" thick. So not sure why it says .063.. either that spec is compressed...

7.3 IDI Thicker Head Gasket Source other than Fel-Pro

Thank you for the replies. I went to see my machinist yesterday and respectfully laid out my concern. He understood my issue and said the sleeves shrank a little after heating. He chamfered as he honestly thought the firing ring would be outside of all of this. Got carried away with some of the...

7.3 IDI Thicker Head Gasket Source other than Fel-Pro

That is correct. And for some reason, he sloped the deck into the under flushed sleeves. I measured the worse cylinder and it is .020" to deck the block to the top of the sleeve. I'm afraid he's ruined my block without the option of a thicker head gasket. Guess won't really know unless I measure...

7.3 IDI Thicker Head Gasket Source other than Fel-Pro

I was trying to find out if anyone knows why I could get my hands on an extra thick head gasket for our engines? .020-.030" thicker than stock? I received back my block from my machinist after putting 8 sleeves in it and decked .007" off block. Was planning to use fel-pro gasket (.010" thicker...

Update: Picked up the block today from the machine shop. 8 Sleeves installed and decked. He left a nice 1/2" shoulder at the bottom for the sleeves to stop against. Almost time to start assembly!

7.3 IDI Mild Build going in a 1986 F350 thread

Hey Nero, it is set very high. Not sure why it's there other than maybe it's a factory unit that has been repurposed. I intend to place the catch can on the pass side of the radiator next to the battery since I don't have an intercooler pipe going down through there. I plan to use a water to air...

7.3 IDI Mild Build going in a 1986 F350 thread

ALSO, stage 2 turbo came in from CDD! Took a solid 4 months from purchase to arrival (maybe short days from 4 months). I was hoping it would have been a few months sooner but I guess it's all right since the engine is still in the shop anyway. It looks gorgeous. Can't wait to start installing...

I don't blame you. New was quite a chunk. I'm hoping I don't have to raise the back too much but I won't know for certain until the engine is completely installed and see where we're sitting. I will likely do something similar in the back myself. I would also like to add airbags down the road...

I went with FoMoCo V-code springs for a 2" lift from a stock 4wd height. I don't know what that equates to fora 2wd to 4wd but I imagine it will be more than 2". P/N 2C3Z-5310-HA @TahoeTom How so? They're the same crank with the exception of balance for the differing piston masses is my...

7.3 IDI Mild Build going in a 1986 F350 thread

Been awhile since I've updated. Engine got inspected and found that several of the head bolt threads were missing half way down due to corrosion. Ugh. The shop had a spare 7.3 in their storage with fantastic threads and zero corrosion. Unfortunately, the cylinders need .030" to clean up.. after...

    7.3 IDI Bore or Sleeve?

My NA 7.3 idi for my mild turbo build seems it will need a .030" over bore to clean up. The block is rust free, pressure tested, and all head bolt threads intact. Researching it seems most advise against boring this motor over due to cavitation. Is the cavitation concern blown out too much or is...

Also purchased the front half of a 1990 F350 w/ a Dana 60 king pin. Buying the frame with it is definitely the way to go as there are several brackets I will be transferring. 7.3 IDIT Turbo Exhaust Valves source

I may have asked too soon. Found them. Yes, IDIT valves were a different metallurgy (inconel) make up over the NA valves. My rebuilder is strongly encouraging me to go with the turbo spec exhaust valves given my plans for it. The International P/N for the turbo valves is 1816638C2 The SBI...
