Rebuild My Stock Turbo Send to be Rebuilt, or Get Aftermarket Turbo?

Fellas - I have the engine just about done for Project Brutus - 7.3, head studs, R&D IDI cam, etc. Have one of Justin's 90cc pumps on the way for it, and will buy some of his Stage 1 injectors, too. Hoping for 550 ft/lbs at the rear wheels. I have the stock Garrett turbo and all associated...

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

Short block is together, but not without a bit of frustration. I ended up breaking two Perfect Circle oil rings on install; wasn't happy with the way they fit so I swapped them all to some that fit better (came from Hypermax, but I believe they're Clevite). Also replaced the #8 piston with a...

Need 3 Standard Bore OEM Oil Rings & Expanders for 7.3 - Source?

Fellas - I need three standard bore OEM (Mahle or similar) oil rings for a standard bore 7.3. All I can find are complete ring sets. Does anyone know where I might be able to find some? Thanks, Scott

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

Got one head done - valves lapped by hand, Comp 910-16 springs installed, installed at 1.800" on exhaust (needed .060" + .015" shim) and 1.785" on intake (no shims). Will be out of town for a week, but will finish the other head and the short block when I return.

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

Crank is in, no issues. Clearance on the all mains is .002" or so. Haven't installed the piston rings yet because I decided to go with a gapless second ring, to the tune of $30 each from Total Seal. They're ordered but haven't arrived yet. Justin at idiperformance.com builds a lot of these...

    How to Install Oil Rings?

I'll either call Justin or Total Seal, but I'm surprised that no one here knows.

    How to Install Oil Rings?

Well, before I can do a "how-to" I kind of need to figure out how to do it myself...

    How to Install Oil Rings?

7.3 build continues - got the crank in with no issues. Endplay of .005". Main bearings at .002". But now it's time to install the piston rings, and the oil rings are new to me. Is there a trick to install them? From what I can tell, the expander type deal fits behind the ring, and it's got...

    Easiest 4x4 conversion?

I did a fair amount of research before I started and went with the Sky's Offroad kit. Truck started life as an '87 F350 4x2 crew cab dually, 6.9, ZF-5. When I got it, it hadn't been running in about 20 years. Anyway, I've always wanted a crew cab diesel dually 4x4 so I decided to build one...

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

It was not rough at all. Frankly, it was the first time I had used this method, so it was more of a proof of concept. Having said that, it looked much better when I was done. I have before measurements but didn't measure after. If there's a difference in size, I'm guessing maybe half a...

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

Got the crank polished this weekend: shoelace + wet/dry sandpaper (600/1000/1500) doused with WD40 + Mothers metal polish + 3 hours of time = crank that looks brand new.

7.3 IDI Cylinder Head - Rebuilt - Locust Grove, VA

Rebuilt 7.3 IDI cylinder head from a 1988 Ford F350. The engine was running when removed and had only 31,000 miles (it was a plow truck - only used in winter). I went completely through the head - disassembled, cleaned, magnafluxed (checked for cracks), checked for straightness (within...

Comp 910-16 Springs and Valve Rotators?

Thanks. Actually gave Justin a call yesterday. He said intake may be a bit tight (slightly less than 1.800") but that's no big deal. He also said to reinstall the rotators. Scott

What to look for in a truck that's been lifted?

A 1990 F350 4x4 should start off with 4" lift blocks on top of rear axle, right? These were from the factory, and accounted for the amount of lift you got from the solid axle D60 up front. If so, how did he get the additional 3" in the back? Hopefully not by adding taller lift blocks. FYI -...

Comp 910-16 Springs and Valve Rotators?

I'm installing the Comp 910-16 valve springs this weekend (7.3 IDI with Stage 1 turbo, 90cc IP, head studs, etc). I understand that the springs need to be installed at 1.8" so I may need to shim to get that height. What about rotators? I have these on exhaust only. Should I plan to reinstall...

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

Spent the day working on heads - valve seats and valve guides. My valve guides were at .3885" or so, depending on the guide (they were enlarged .015" when rebuilt before I got the motor and valves with .015" oversize stems were installed). On some of the valves, the guide to valve stem...

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

Rechecked taper and out of round and I'm good. Most cylinders are .002" out of round, which is the max, but none are greater. Max taper is .002" with max allowed of .003". Explanation of the below - taper is checked on thrust plane/axis only. Out of round is the max difference between two...

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

Verified that I have the newer style pistons and rings. Engine serial number is 601641, with compression ring thickness of .1175". Engines with serial numbers lower than 598754 got the pistons with the .0775" ring. Checked bores with dial bore gauge, measuring for out of round (.002" max)...

So what did you do with your truck today?

Checked bores for taper and out of round. Ran through it quickly and now I have some measurements that appear to be just out of spec, so I'm re-doing it tomorrow.
