7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

Got some ok news today and some bad news. Ok news is that the deck of the 7.3 block is good, both sides. Less than .002" warp so it does't need to be decked. Just did the basic check with a good straightedge and a .002" feeler gauge. Bad news happened after I cleaned the block. I was...

Specialty Tools Needed for 7.3 Rebuild?

I do have a good ring compressor and plenty of blocks of wood! I have a balancer tool as well. Thanks

Specialty Tools Needed for 7.3 Rebuild?

Fellas - I'm about to start reassembling my 7.3 this weekend. Are there any specialty tools needed other than the obvious stuff? I have valvespring compressors, micrometers, piston ring compressors, torque wrenches, plastigage, etc. Just wondering about any IDI specific stuff, like oil seal...

    Piston cracks

Gotcha. Definitely different. I'm going with NA pistons/rods in my turbo 7.3 build; I have turbo rods, but I don't have the correct crank (casting ending in 2C or C2; forget which one) for a turbo rotating assembly.

    Piston cracks

Rock Auto or Summit. If you're going to sleeve, it makes sense to sleeve to standard bore for 7.3. I'd go with Mahle/Clevite. RockAuto has them - https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/ford,1990,f-350,7.3l+445cid+v8+diesel,1126549,engine,piston+&+piston+ring+kit,14008 I suspect Enginetech would...

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

Cleaned up the pistons today. I'm not a fan of wire wheeling them; used ultra fine ScotchBrite with some 50/50 (acetone/ATF). Skirts have all machining marks intact and no surprises hiding under the carbon on the crowns. Hope to get the short block assembled this coming weekend.

    Piston cracks

I would not run that. Had similar cracks in pistons from a 1994 IDI turbo. Tossed 'em in the scrap bin.

Sealed Power rings are on the way, too. Magged and mic'ed the crank today. Standard rods and mains, as expected. No cracks.

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

Ended up with Sealed Power rod and main bearings. Was hoping to get Mahle/Clevite but their standard stuff was all backordered. Ordered set of ARP head studs from Justin at R&D IDI.

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

Bottom end disassembled. Crank looks good. Pistons look good. Bearing are original - dated March 1988 (crank) and May 1988 (rods). Next step is to clean, inspect, and magnaflux the crank and block. Also need to get bearings and rings ordered. Bearings should be easy enough, what about rings...

7.3 idi turbo connecting rod need the big pin

I have a set of 8 that I will be selling. I had planned to sell as a set, but would consider selling one. Message me if interested. EDIT - just realized this is from January 2022, not 2023. Whatever the case, let me know if you (or anyone else) still needs a set.

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

Measured valve recession today. All valves on both sets of heads are good to go. Also tested valvespring pressure; also good to go, but I'm pretty sure I'll end up changing these.

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

Good info, Josh. Since it looks like I'm going to keep the stock bottom end, I'm more inclined to intercool at this point. Agree that it's easier to plumb and install as the truck is coming back together. Thanks

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

Some good news and some bad news today - bad news is that the crank from the 1994 IDI turbo engine that I disassembled is not the correct one for the turbocharged engine. It's a 1805420C1 (regular 6.9/7.3 crank) not the 1805420C2 turbo crank, which is balanced differently because of the heavier...

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking, too. I'd be tickled pink to have 550 ft/lbs at the wheels.

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

Ok, just got off the phone with Justin at R&D IDI. When I told him what I wanted to do, he recommended an RD2-90 pump, the Stage 1 drop in turbo, Stage 1 camshaft, and some Stage 1 injectors. That's about $3k in parts, but I was expecting that. He recommended the turbo pistons (Mahle $750/set...

Yeah, I like to be thorough when I can be. Not in a huge hurry on this build.

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

Measured guides this weekend with small hole/split ball gauge and a mic. The '88 NA heads are pretty damn good - all in the .0022" range, give or take. The factory spec was .0021" or so and max allowed is .0055" so I'm nowhere near that. Too bad one of the heads is cracked in between the...

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

Checked the valves today to see if the stems were still within spec. Measured at top of valve (area where it doesn't enter valve guide) and then measured 1/3 down, and then 2/3 down the stem (areas where it travels in the valve guide). All valves were within spec, I believe, with no more than...

    Pulled a 1987 out of a hole

Painful job but very rewarding once done, especially if your truck was wired by Stevie Wonder. If so, he gets around; he seems to have touched most of my vehicles before I buy them.
  22. bulletpruf

So what did you do with your truck today?

Working on cylinder heads, here. I cleaned 'em up, checked them for straightness, checked for cracks (dye penetrant and magnaflux), and now I need to check the valves and valve guides. Short block is up next.

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

I had considered that; just worried that the cracks in the NA precups will get worse when knocking them out or re-installing them. Thanks

7.3 IDI Turbo Build for '87 Crew Cab Dually 4x4

From there, I went to the 7.3 IDI heads from a 1994 turbo engine to see if they were good. No cracks in the heads, but all pre-cups have multiple cracks, some past the fire ring. Still haven't found a source for new pre-cups so this could be problematic. The '94 heads are not warped...
