I removed the sound proofing (just roughly for now) and am left with this:
And this:
They will clean up nicely given enough time, but the rips and crumpled areas concern me. Given all the time I'm putting into the engine and other things, I would prefer new liners. I suppose I could try...
I'm looking for new fender liners, but everything I find is for gassers.
The original diesel part #'s are:
E7TZ-16054-B Right
E7TZ-16055-B Left
They have long since been discontinued of course.
The ones LMC have state for gas only.
The ones from NPD state "MODIFY FOR DIESELS".
Anyone have...
Yep, great tips about POR-15. I have used it quite bit like on my gooseneck trailer frame and batwing mower decks. Very true about it having to wear off if you get it on your hands. Ask me how I know, lol. I too used cheap HF brushes on those other projects and the Saran Wrap, but I didn't...
Found a used one on Marketplace in decent shape:
He also sent me a video:
No cracks along the top. Figured I'll get it cleaned up and then hit it with POR-15 and then glossy white.
Took the core to a body shop. After looking at it, he did not recommend attempting to fix it. The area above the rusted out part that supports the fender liners would likely rust out in short order along the repair welds.
I just realized that diesel core support without A/C actually uses a...
That 2014 Dual Electronics radio is being replace by this:
It was just sitting in the opening without having been bolted down as no installation kit was used.
And the generic door speakers are being replaced by these:
Also looking for a powered sub that will fit under the bench seat or...
Also had a chance to break down the blower assembly and A/C. The housing for the evaporator core is in bad shape:
Chunks are missing and it is cracked all along one side. I'm guessing it will be very challenging to find a replacement?
Also, this vacuum motor has seen better days:
The...
Perhaps my best bet is to take my current core to a reputable fabrication shop? I mean all it really needs is to have those welds where the cracks were redone by someone older than 6 years, lol. And then add a couple of fresh flat pieces where the rusted out parts are for the fender liners...
Old floor matt:
Also got rid of the old sound/heat insulation. That left me with this:
Rear door corners are pretty rotted:
I'm scared to take a needle scaler to those areas thinking it will more or less remove everything. Can I just use some rust encapsulator instead to keep it from...
Looks like both LMC and NPD carries the diesel specific core support.
LMC:
NPD:
I'm assuming both will be the same gauge thickness as OEM? Any experience with either?
Also, both state "w/o A/C". Does that just mean they don't come with the brackets to hold the A/C condenser? These...
Appreciate the offer @Nero ! But yeah, shipping from OR to VA would be a lot of pennies!
So I pulled out my core support for another look. Here she is:
So there are the 2 cracks along the top with poor welds (one already came undone from handling it). I think that will be a pretty easy...
Yeah, most of the ones I've found so far don't have the lower support going down deep enough.
I'm starting to get nervous about my 2 IP cores I sent to CDD:
They were sent "ground advantage" which was still $45 and no, I didn't add insurance.
Called the San Antonio PO, but I can't get a...
Thanks for the tip on using studs under the dip stick bracket. Much better now:
I had one flat nut, I'll see if I can find another, or maybe just fine one down to keep the bracket from being raised that far off the "triangles" but it doesn't really hurt anything the way it is I suppose...
Thanks @IDIBRONCO forgot about that one! @Nero sage advice! I was planning on doing that since those 2 pins on the 12 pin connected were more or less melted anyway:
So as far as running new heavy gauge to the GPC, it looks to be about 4' to the starter solenoid or about 5-6' to the...
Thanks again guys! Ok, so the original '89 harness is going back in.
Got it pulled apart and cleaned up. It was nasty:
Glow plus harness is separate from the rest of the wires. Got it loosely fitted back on the engine.
Rear:
No place to plug these in yet:
But fuel shut off...
Thanks @IDIBRONCO ! Yes that helps a lot. I'll get those sensors moved around.
So I got out my original '89 harness along with the '92 one from the donor engine.
The main difference I see is that the '92 harness (foreground) has the large 12 pin connector at the very end of the harness...
Appreciate the feedback on the sensor locations. I guess my original engine was all messed up then as to where the sensors were located, which is not surprising given the terrible wiring job they did.
My driver side head has 3/8" NPT plugs in both side holes: (remember these were rebuild heads...
I looked through my old pictures, but didn't have one showing what goes here: (red arrow)
By method of elimination, I think this sender (with 2 spade lugs on it), goes here. Did I get that right?
With the engine almost done, I started looking at the air filter housing. The lid has seen...
Motor mount issue sorted itself out as the motor mount brackets were slightly different and would only bolt onto the matching side. And with those installed, it was just a matter of matching the notches:
Hamonic balancer painted and sleeved:
Water pump, thermostatic housing, IP housing...
Lol, yeah, having a HF close by is dangerous!
@XOLATEM Great thought on the motor mount brackets, but neither side is that close to the dipstick tube.
That $145 valley pan gasket come in. Got it installed:
And the intake, injectors and glow plugs:
In hindsight, I should have probably...
Yeah, that press has come in handy more times than I can count! I'm so happy we now have a local HF store. I had to drive 50 miles to pick up mine back 10 years ago or so.
Figured that heather/blower assembly is no longer stocked. I'll get it all cleaned up and see what I got. Might be fine...
Called around and nobody had the felpro in stock or could order it. I did cross it to the navistar 1805389C3, but all the places that had that one in stock wanted $120+ with shipping on top, so ended up just sucking it up and ordered from CDD as I'd rather throw my business their way since I'll...
Got the oil cooler back together:
Had to use a shim as it didn't want to go back on straight otherwise.
Painted that one side of the engine and then installed the oil cooler:
Rotated the engine and installed the heads and valve train:
And finally, the valve covers:
I had planned...
Forgot to mentioned that I called Classic Diesel Design early last week and spoke to Joe. I shipped him both of my IPs after he confirmed they were both good cores. Also shipped him my 2 spare oil coolers. Just those items cost me $100 to ship using USPS (did the click-n ship on their...
