    7.3 IDI Tachometer

tachs were not available at all on vans, at least before 1992. maybe they added it as an option on the next gen that started in 92. vans got the sensor for e4od but still had no tach gauge. but yeah maybe 1985 was the first year it was an option on trucks, so vans got the same cover with the...

    7.3 IDI Tachometer

or c6 but you lose mpg Econolines before e4od didn't get a tach sensor at all because vans didn't get a tach gauge. The port was there on the 85 I had been it had a plug in it. the tach in the 87 f250 i had, had a bad tach sensor but it wasn't worth spending money on, just for a tach gauge.

    Fuel level increase overnight

Gauge could cause it. or wiring between the gauge and selector valve. the valve just switches which sending unit is connected to the gauge. but i have seen IDIs with slightly wandering fuel gauges like that too, as i recall

$9.15 clearance 75w140 full synthetic at Advance

The gearbox in my GMC is also leaky but the worst leak seemed to be the reservoir because it leaked 24/7, regardless of the engine being on or not. $10 for a seal kit and a few hours pulling and installing the pump (and new pressure hose i bought last year but hadn't installed) beats $200+ for a...

$9.15 clearance 75w140 full synthetic at Advance

Also - It seems the company that owned the fram brand (First Brands Group, LLC) went bankrupt back in September last year, so they have ALL fram stuff on clearance. I grabbed a 12oz bottle of power steering fluid (last one) for 85 cents, 6 bottles of gas fuel system cleaner for $1.35 each (was...

$9.15 clearance 75w140 full synthetic at Advance

Figured I'd share this deal I found on 75w140 full synthetic gear oil. I ordered 3 for my GMC RV that replaced my last IDI van, which uses around 3qts. I'll be picking it up locally, but you can get free shipping on $35+ if aren't near one. I think the diffs in IDIs usually use around 4 qts...

    Lift pump pressure ???

I had an idi that didn't like pressure over around 3-3.5 psi. it lost all top end power at 5-6psi. pedal to the floor would barely get to 55. i had installed a holly red because the mechanical pump was weeping to the ground. it was on an Econoline and getting to the pump was harder due to how...

I think I'll keep my 7.3 as long as I can!

California was very generous about diesel emissions. They waited 22 years longer to begin smog checking diesels. So, all IDIs are smog exempt in California.

I think I'll keep my 7.3 as long as I can!

If I still had my 87 F250 I'd probably say the same. Yeah I still have the "Smurf" van right now, but I am still trying to sell it. It's not practical to keep. It's way too big to keep just to drive my mom around, since she totaled her car in late June. Especially since a week ago, I bought a...

FS: 1989 E350 extended boxy 7.3 E4OD with Banks turbo

I used it on my mom's car but it was more digital and wasn't as old. I tried it on the F250 idi once and it caused the main throttle cable to pop loose. It crippled it down to about 45-50mph. Thankfully I was on a US highway and was able to pull over after a mile or two at an old closed gas...

FS: 1989 E350 extended boxy 7.3 E4OD with Banks turbo

I haven't looked into the cruise control but no I don't think it works. I don't trust old mechanical cruise control myself. I disconnect them on IDIs to get rid of one source of possible vac leaks.

FS: 1989 E350 extended boxy 7.3 E4OD with Banks turbo

BUMP - still available. Someone backed out of buying it after putting down a non-refundable deposit and not coming back after his 3 weeks granted to pay the balance. He said he bought a pickup instead. Title is still clear, nothing was filled out. Also price reduced to $3000. I can't edit the...

Hydroboost Saginaw pump? (a little off topic..)

That's entirely possible. I spotted a "used like new" (aka new, just returned) Dorman MC39309 on Amazon for $30, so I grabbed it. That's over 50% off vs new. I put a "used" Dorman Saginaw PS pump from Amazon on the IDI RV and it was fine.

Hydroboost Saginaw pump? (a little off topic..)

Looking through my 1994 G-series official GM factory service manual for some torque specs, I ran across this. It clearly shows a MC39309 for JB8/JD7. Make of that what you will.

Rear drum brake keeper spring pop off

A 1978 Dodge camper van had that happen after I paid a lot of money ($1000+) for brake work (+tow and diff rebuild because an ****** hick running a repair shop, that I should not have trusted, tore it apart and didn't know how to put it back together) which damaged the brand new drum I provided...

A tip: using old GM in line fuel filter on IDIs

Ok you were somewhat right. Somewhat. Dorman makes these. 3/8: https://www.dormanproducts.com/p-33149-800-934.aspx 5/16: https://www.dormanproducts.com/p-22738-800-933.aspx But you still have to cobble it together, because it's not a direct fit. I'd have to cut off most of the steel lines...

A tip: using old GM in line fuel filter on IDIs

no they don't. vans get neglected for parts. if you can find them for a 94 GMC G3500, by all means link them please edit: i found the front ones from one seller but how old are those rubber lines? would you trust 20 year old rubber fuel hoses? and it's $110+27 shipping+tax for only the ones by...

A tip: using old GM in line fuel filter on IDIs

This is the crap GM put. The fuel pressure on a new, properly running 350 TBI fuel pump is about 9-13psi, so it's stupid and uncalled for to have such heavily built, special hoses. GM saw dollar signs and went with special lines you could only get from them. Now you can't get them at all. So...

A tip: using old GM in line fuel filter on IDIs

I could only find 5/16 ones in metal when looking several years ago. I stuck a pair of 5/16 ones between the tanks and new FSV on the big IDI RV and they didn't seem to restrict the flow, with a Holley red.

A tip: using old GM in line fuel filter on IDIs

Working on replacing the 31 year old awful hydraulic hose type fuel lines on my 94 GMC with standard 3/8 and 5/16 hose, I had to do a lot of research for fittings. GM could have used regular fuel hose but NoOoOoO they put special hoses you had to get from GM. And now they're NLA. I really...
