    new tires?

Everybody loves a good tire argument --- I mean discussion. Myself, I cannot recommend any radial tire for use on gravel roads; this is where quality bias tires rule. We have had several bad experiences with various Goodyear LT tires, enough that I can't recommend them; admittedly, I have...

Lets Talk About U-Joints and Carrier Bearings

The "slip-yoke" IS a wear item and requires occasional replacement. If one allows the outer "softer" portion of the slip-yoke to wear too long, then it will also ruin the harder splines of the welded-on portion, requiring it's replacement by having the weld cut apart on a lathe and the new...

10 speed eaton fuller or road ranger behind a 7.3 IDI has it been done

I often have to drive 8LLs and the ones we have are made to shift in two completely different patterns; some are a plain old normal "H" pattern; the others are a "horse-shoe" pattern, meaning 3rd is where 4th should be and 4th is where 3rd should be. BOTH styles of these are labeled "8LL" on...

10 speed eaton fuller or road ranger behind a 7.3 IDI has it been done

But, you would not have the brute strength of a genuine Fuller, nor the progressive ease of shifting. The main reason for the swap is not so much to gain gears, as to gain strength and reliability. The ZF transmissions, be they ZF-5 or ZF-6, are not well suited for a truck application and...

10 speed eaton fuller or road ranger behind a 7.3 IDI has it been done

And, for what it's worth, my 4-speed auxilliary, 6041 I think, has two under-drive gears, a direct 1-to-1, and an over-drive.

10 speed eaton fuller or road ranger behind a 7.3 IDI has it been done

BUT, the auxilliaries DO mount in "divorced" fashion with a jack-shaft between the main and the auxilliary. As for the 10-speed --- I abhor them; they are an aggravation to shift. I very much prefer a 9-speed; and, better yet, a 9-speed with deep-reduction. I always have to fight a...

dual stabilizer - will this one fit?

I was going to look today, but it was coming a monsoon and did so the entire daylight hours; according to the fore-cast, tomorrow looks to be even worse :(

dual stabilizer - will this one fit?

I will try to remember to poke my head under the truck and refresh my memory in daylight tomorrow. I am fairly certain the bracket is attached to the outside of the frame, with bolts through existing holes, and with a big reinforcing plate on the inside of the frame. As best I remember, my...

dual stabilizer - will this one fit?

The bracket on my dual-stabilizer attaches to the steer-board (starboard) frame-rail, in front of the axle. The other end-bracket U-bolts onto the main tie-rod.

    bed cap/topper vs. MPG

Myself, I would hook the goose-neck to the diesel, then load the gas-burner with the topper of choice on the goose-neck. Whoever owns the hauled truck could pay for the fuel and everyone comes out a winner. In the event of a catastrophic emergency, swap places and carry on. :)

Door Latch, Cup Holder, and Other Misc Questions

The door pegs should have plastic sleeves on them. The simplest fix is to buy a foot or so of plastic tubing at the hardware store, cut a short piece of appropriate length, split it length-wise, and just snap it over the metal striker. A foot of tubing will be enough to make several years...

I need some big time diagnostic help. Lots of photos and as much info as I can muster

One more thing I will add : Replace the radiator-cap with a LEVER-LOCK cap of the appropriate PSI. Thus, instead of spewing coolant all over when loosening the cap, you can first raise the lever to vent all the pressure into the over-flow jug. I have LEVER-LOCK caps on all of my stuff.

I need some big time diagnostic help. Lots of photos and as much info as I can muster

Were I in your boat, I would remove the radiator-cap and warm up the engine, dump TWO big-truck-sized bottles of PELLETTED BARS LEAKS in the radiator, replace the cap, and immediately drive it at least thirty miles to circulate things. Then, I would just keep a weather-eye on the coolant...

dual stabilizer - will this one fit?

I have a "Rough Country" (I think??) dual-steering-stabilizer that is specific to my 1985 F-350 DRW 2WD I have had this maybe five years and really am well pleased with it. The two BIG shock-absorbers really make for much firmer steering control. I turned each cylinder in opposite...

If it wasn't for bad luck, i'd have no luck....stolen alcoa dually wheel

Whether it be changing a tire, having the washing machine fixed, swapping an engine, or having the septic-tank pumped, in the rare event that I don't just handle these things myself, whoever I have doing the work is someone I have known their entire life. I know who and how many times they...

If it wasn't for bad luck, i'd have no luck....stolen alcoa dually wheel

My bet is that your pot-metal wheel is on the inside. Most tire-shop employees, :( sadly, are not given any incentive to be very careful; when one works week after week after week for barely enough money to buy enough gas to get back and forth to work, one soon sours on the job. :(...

X TWO on what the Warden said. I have swivel-chains on all of our oil-caps and any other caps that permit such improvements.

    S1600 Rebuild

I have been using that #2 Form-a-Gasket stuff for years, even way back when Mr Gasket first invented it; it is real good stuff on many applications, especially good to coat both sides of any gasket that might need be removed intact some time in the next fifty years. The advice about improper...

Centramatic and Counteract Balancing Beads users.........

I am a firm believer in Centramatics. NEVER USE BOTH TOGETHER, Centramatics and any loose material in the tire. Being in the tire business all my life, I have seen it all. Don't pay a big price for so-called balancing beads; they are no more than glorified sand. So long as you use...

why you can throw stupid power easily at a cummins and have to work at a IDI......

Concerning my mileage statement, I meant that, in my own experience, an average run-of-the-mill 6BT will usually get twice the fuel-mileage of a run-of-the-mill V-8 IDI. I know some have carefully timed and tuned their IDIs to get decent mileage comparable to a 6BT. :)

why you can throw stupid power easily at a cummins and have to work at a IDI......

Several years ago, it was not un-common to see a 3208 back-yard-mechaniced into a 70s Ford. I never saw one that looked like a carefully thought out install, but they were in there and they worked. When Ford introduced the first real diesel 1-ton trucks in 1983, this practice sort of went...

    Truck sleeper boot material

I will add that J.C.Whitney and similar concerns used to have an inflatable cushion that sealed between the cab and camper/topper when both components had sliding windows. This rectangular bladder was placed between the cab and camper and positioned around the perimeter of the window...

    Truck sleeper boot material

You have had better luck at finding something close to boot material than I have had. I need plain old big-truck sleeper-boot material and have had no luck whatsoever in finding it actually for sale online. There is also a similar product to that which you pictured that has clips along...

    lug checkers?

In reality, I have never seen or known of an instance where a big truck wheel ran off simply due to the lug-nuts backing off. On the other hand, I have seen plenty where the whole hub, wheels, and everything came off. I have also seen plenty where the center of the wheel is broken out and...
