Finally got around to testing, and then replacing the glow plugs.. 4 stuck.

While I'd prefer nothing was wrong I knew I wasn't signing up for that with an old truck. I'm an "action" guy so action points, or a direction, helps a lot. I'll give it a go, aka punch it. You're suggesting I do that when the truck is cold, correct? I'm wondering if the stutter when cold may...

Thanks! 1.) If I attempt to drive away immediately or shortly after (within a couple minutes) cold start up the truck stutters a bit physically (power drops off occasionally) That is still the case now and has been for the past few weeks. Wasn't such an issue back in the fall. 2.) I did, it...

For those still following this I'm thinking it is probably the DMF. My only confusion is why does it go away when it is warm? At any rate, clutch in seems to reduce the rattling. Riding the clutch in a gear or having clutch out in gear and the rattling disappears. I'm planning on having the...

I ended up purchasing mine out of the desert in January for 5k with unknown miles. You're very likely going to have to look south for a rust free truck. I think it is worth it.

I was wondering if anyone knew where the hell thing this was supposed to be plugged. Its on a harness that heads from the IP towards the passenger side. Found that plug kinda sitting on the passenger valve cover.

I don't know if I'm right at all. In my mind the clutch is only spinning when the flywheel is and the clutch is engaged. I might completely not understand though.

Thank you. Unfortunately all of those are 2.5 hrs or so away so I'm going to have to use them as a backup. Going to call a couple diesel shops within an hour tomorrow.

Well, I just tried it and it still rattles with the clutch in. It might be a little worse with the clutch out but hard to tell. On the whole, after removing the wire to the cold timing advance plug, the rattling does not seem as violent, loud, or last as long. Could be I'm just overly sensitive...

It is a metropolis compared to us. They have probably 8 different mechanics between them and Johnson Village... we have two.

All this about the DMF is dependent on the clutch making it disappear when I try starting it. Considering heading to work late and maybe giving it a go this morning. Not sure if the engine will have been cold enough after sitting in the garage all night. Might still have some warmth to it.

I've heard of a decent diesel shop down in Buena Vista that I'll call and ask about the timing. The smoke does disappear but it wouldn't hurt to have it checked. Understood. I've also heard of a decent transmission shop down in BV. Guess I'll be talking to them about this. When I mentioned the...

I read some stuff where if the flywheel breaks it takes the transmission case with it. I just haven't been able to find enough information as to how far along in the progression towards "oh ****" I am at...

Jesus, sorry. That'll mess things up for awhile. Roger 15 degrees temperature outside. I was under the impression that cold these should smoke? I need to have this timed? New clutch it is. If this is actually the issue. It also appears I need to drop the tranny for this. That either means...

I've never been inside a flywheel cover so I'm not sure I'll know what I'll be looking at. I'm going to do some more research this evening and see what I can learn. I don't quite understand the direction of movement I am looking for from the clutch to test the flywheel. I actually think he set...

I'm going to have to wait until tomorrow when it is dead cold and then try this again to test the clutch and see if that has an affect.

Got it. So I tried that. The rattling didn't seem as bad (in fact it seemed much less but still there off and on) with the wire disconnected however it could be the engine is just getting warmer.... The clutch, when depressed, if it is supposed to have an instantaneous affect, it doesn't. There...

Yeah I'm about to go fool around with the clutch. I still don't quite understand this cold timing advance. I know there is the cold high idle, I understand that and I know that recently stopped working. What exactly am I looking for with the cold timing advance? How does that affect things? I...

The sounds this guy has, that he describes as a rough idle, is pretty much exactly the sound I have. I hit the pedal and it disappears. Makes me wonder if it is that cold timing issue. His sound start at 7:30

I just got under there and pried on the heatsheild while it was rattling, no change. I paid more attention on shutoff, it rattled as it passed through 300 RPM but it was a damn quick rattle. Not sure if that means anything or not. I shouldn't be expecting anything engine related right? Like...

Okay so that could be it however it doesn't seem to do it when I shut the engine off. I let the truck sit all day, got home from work, and got under there. I put a bunch of self taping screws into that heat shield (the one on the bottom of the cab by the exhaust pipe) and no dice. Bent the heat...

Alright gentleman. I'm hoping I get my truck back later this afternoon then I'm going to start digging into that. I asked my mechanic his opinion and he thinks its the heat shroud on the down pipe from the turbo... idk what to say about that. The issue did begin directly after the turbo install...

Thanks for the response. I lost my fast idle upon cold start while I was changing the glow plugs, as in it wasn't working after the fact but was before. I probably leaned on something or hit something while I was working on the engine. This issue was an issue before changing glow plugs however...

Okay gentlemen, I calmed down a bit, then went through the roof when I added up all the parts to discover I've dropped about 10k in parts into this truck this year... I'm hoping my math is wrong but maybe thats why I'm almost broke. Working on calming back down again. Oh well, 15k total is still...

I actually watched that video this morning, but thank you. He seems like a really knowledgeable guy, I believe I heard of him once upon a time. The way Banks had me modify it (per instructions) the return line runs from Injector 7 (against firewall) on the passenger side around the front of the...
