New 6.9 IDI - Deciding if worth resurrecting or not

No registration/title is definitely a problem here. Unofficially... thats when people buy a beater with papers and and do either a full cab or dash swap.

E450 Brake Upgrade for 2WD OBS Trucks

My '97 E350 and '95 F350 had dual piston calipers. These are the bolt-on style, vs the wedge system used for 94-older. This older style isnt upgradable without a knuckle change. Hydroboost makes a big difference though.

New 6.9 IDI - Deciding if worth resurrecting or not

I test GPs in place with an ohmmeter, or more reliably, measure that they flow current (amps). Comp test is always best done hot/warm, but if the engine doesnt run.... gotta make do.

New 6.9 IDI - Deciding if worth resurrecting or not

Since its a manual, i would pursue the resurrection. If you want to get glow plugs going again, IMHO wire them to basic ford starter solenoid and a manual pushbutton. That way you have the choice of starting aid. IDI injectors dont atomize fuel. They shoot a stream of fuel into the pre-cup...

    Battery jumper packs?

i grab every dead jump pack I can find. Of the last 2... one donated its clamp leads to make a 'battery in a milk crate' jump pack. The other got a hand-me-down used battery from something else and works again.

Blue Top or Red Top steering gear?

I wont buy a 'boutique' steering box. Good used, rebuild my own, or local rebuilder for me.

    7.3idi swap

Theres a great variety of rear disc diffs from newer diesel trucks 90's/00's freightliner, International, Hino, Topkick, etc with 4.xx-5.xx ratios

    Powerstroke E350 questions.

Dealing with the fuel system on top of the engine is the biggest pain. Mine had high miles and hours (ex-bus); had chronic starting problems, which improved slightly after a better-used hpop and a new ipr. I fear age is also a strong enemy on these engines. Lots of o-ring seals to break down...

    5.9 vs 6.5

whats your motivation? My preference would be converting a DRW to singles. Then you have the higher gvwr headroom while saving on width and tires.

    5.9 vs 6.5

5.9 burns less fuel and less breakdowns

    5.9 vs 6.5

Those started for '99 model year. Watch out for oddball parts that first half/full year. Can be bit of a pain.

    5.9 vs 6.5

Better truck than the other two. Engine falls in between. Personally, I had some poor 7.3L powersteoke experiences. Prefer the 12-valve cummins.

    5.9 vs 6.5

Those years chev and dodge are cut from similar 'cloth'. IME, both rust out structurally... faster than the generation before them.

    5.9 vs 6.5

6.5 revs higher. Axle ratio and tire size decide the vehicle speed.

    5.9 vs 6.5

IMHO, the truck qualities are similar and not especially great. The dodge has the better engine, but the worse front steering/suspension. The chevy will be lower and easier to load a harley into.

Where do you get your steering parts?

To be clear, I buy Quicksteer for value, and it holds up well - not because of its corporate affiliation.

    Turbo

checked your local ads? i often see non-running 6.5 trucks for parts or selling rather cheap. there is also www.car-part.com to search with.

    Intake manifold gaskets on Amazon

I needed a HG for our 3.7L Jeep, and Amazon's price on the Felpro was only 25% of the local parts store price. It sealed fine. Been on there 2 years now.

Where do you get your steering parts?

For steering box on these, imho its not about where to buy as what to buy. I would get the Delphi 680 box or the even stronger "6-bolt" box. For joints and links i like Quicksteer (moog's budget brand that still has grease nipples). Hubs (unit bearings) I get longest life from Timken or SKF...

    Picked up 96 F250 5 Speed.

I didnt get anywhere with an OBD scanner on my '97. There was no engine check light lit either, to suggest any codes were tripped. YMMV.

    gas station diesel

Low sulfur is not Ultra low sulfur. 0.05% vs 15ppm.

    Picked up 96 F250 5 Speed.

Theres lots of reasons to have a no-start on a PSD, and hope pulling the injectors wasnt his first move. My tired '97 ended up needing a hpop and new ipr. Thats after doing all the electrical tests i could manage and a bleed-down test on the hpo system. I did end up doing a cps and lpop first...

no - i'd quote you then Just throwing it in because we're on about ULSD fuel quality and thats a common misconception.

    gas station diesel

Do understand the reduced lubricity is cause by the refining process (water washing) used to strip out the final sulfur content. Sulfur in itself is not a lubricant. This water-washing leaves trace residual water dissolved in the fuel. Bio-diesel is hygroscopic also. So you can see, each...
