brand new napa starter not engaging flywheel
If you are headed to the hardware store anyway... get a stud and a nut. Put it in the top bold hole. Makes it easier to install, and then thread the nut on to make it tight... that’s what I do when I have to replace the starter.....- snicklas

Toolkit for ignition switch.
My trouble was hooking up to the glow plug solenoid and the starter solenoid.... plus there was a nice breeze that day too..... if it would have been in a different spot in the driveway I would have waited till a "nicer" day..... but it was blocking another vehicle.....- snicklas

The one day I remember one breaking it was something like 4 F.... and it sat outside all night... block heater was plugged in, but the cab was still as cold as outside........ it was fun to wire in the bypass with everything being that cold..... turn a nut a turn or two, then put your hand...- snicklas

7.3 idi turbo hard to start
Yes, run a grounded push button to the post the WHITE wire is on the glow plug relay. This will manually activate the glow plugs..... Done this on a few of my IDI's.- snicklas

Absolute "Oh S**T" emergency..... Turn key to unlock the steering wheel. If it goes the the "run" position, jump starter solenoid. If truck is still dead but the wheel is unlocked. Jumper from battery to FSS on the pump (could even use a set of booster cables in a pinch), jump starter...- snicklas

What batteries do you have in your idi?
Interstate Economy Group 65's. That's what I run with my IDI's a and my 6.0.... $40 a battery, but you have to get them from a dealer or an Interstate All-Battery Store..... Fortunately I have one less than 15 miles from the house... I actually run the Interstate Economy batteries in...- snicklas

Strange humming noise coming from valley pan/bell housing vicinity
Also, check the routing of your throttle cable. There has been more that one post about a noise that was the throttle cable laying on something and bringing that noise into the cab...- snicklas

You’re gonna have to swap transmissions also. The bolt pattern isn’t the same..... Ford has 3 bolt patterns for transmissions in the trucks. Small Block (I.E. 302, 351), Bib Block (I.E. 460) and Diesel......- snicklas

Engine seal kit with turbo?
Technically, you have a 7.3 N/A with an aftermarket ATS 093 turbo kit on it. The gasket kit for the 7.3 N/A will work fine. If you need gaskets for the turbo, they will not be included in any engine gasket kit. Russ (tyo4) would be the best bet on turbo specifics stuff. Or Wes thewespaul at...- snicklas

Looking for Some Sage Wisdom, 85 F250, 6.9IDI
My personal opinion... I love serpentine belts.... but NOT on an IDI I've owned both. I had an A/C Pump lock up on a Serpentine truck, and I had a poorly positioned block heater cord go through a V-Belt.... The Serpentine truck was at home in my driveway, when it was warm out and daylight...- snicklas

This may sound stupid, but I haven't noticed.... I don't think so..... right now it's on a trailer, so most of the time we have just been reaching up and turning the key. Where is the WTS on a 7.3 SD Dash? I've never driven a 7.3 SD... I have driven an OBS, and own a 6.0. but I know the dash...- snicklas

What is the resistance of the wavy shunt on the GPR controllers?
@Burnt I hate to say it, but you are giving the 7.3 IDI Style "Solid State" glow plug controller WAY too much credit. There is really no intelligent control of the plugs. That Z-Shaped Resistor is there only to measure current draw, it does not limit the voltage to the glow plugs. The IDI...- snicklas

Caliper hanging up?
Yep, had a friend that had a 99 F-150 and was having brake hanging issues. He didn't say anything to me until after it was fixed. Engine swap
The IDI blocks are the same no matter the application. Pickup, Van or IH Medium Duty. They are all drilled the same (except on the "Factory Turbo Block, there are 1/4 oil passage plugs (I.E. Where the turbo oil feed is) rather than 1/8 inch). The "bolt-ons" are what changes by application...- snicklas

Helping with a no start issue
87 should have the 7.3 style glow plug controller, the "all in one" unit behind the intake. The 6.9 style that screws into the head ended in 86.... but in the last 40 years, who knows.....- snicklas

Reverse rotation fan "Left hand thread"
That is the thread that holds the fan clutch to the water pump, not the direction the fan turns. It’s left handed, so that while the engine is running the spin of the engine into the clutch is “tightening” the threads all the time.....- snicklas
