I used to be a firm believer of the “stick with what Ford recommends” camp, but I did some more digging when I rebuilt my trans about a year ago. ZF-5 transmissions are actually used in many other vehicles outside of the US, they’re even in Chevy trucks down in south america. Outside of Ford...
Being an 84 do you have the Dana 44hd axle? I did my brakes, hub bearings+seals, and axle u-joints fairly recently. For the stuff at the hub, it’s pretty much identical to a regular Dana 44 which has several good video guides on YouTube. Here’s the best one (2-part video)I found for the hub...
That’s a really clever fix! The only thing I could see causing problems is if the radius of the pivot ball doesn’t match the radius of the pivot fork. It could wear out pretty quickly. But then again, you can easily adjust the pivot ball to account for any wear, and it’s easier to grease now...
I have the same truck as you except mine is an 89, and mine took the 3 inch shoes. I wonder if the 2.5 inch brakes are for the semi-floater rear ends, and the 3.5 are for duallies. That would make sense to me, but I don’t know for sure. I do know that the 1997 SRW F250 rear end I swapped in also...
I agree the NiCop stuff is much easier to use than steel. Because it comes in a roll, I pushed it through a length of pex pipe to straighten out the length I needed. It came with some fittings but I remember having to buy some more. Making the flares was very satisfying, just remember to put the...
I bought a 25 foot roll of the Ni-cop line from Amazon for like 30 bucks, and a cheap brake crimp tool when I re-did my brake lines. It actually was pretty easy/satisfying to do the crimps. One thing I will say is that the Ni-cop line doesn’t rust, but it does corrode. Here in Ohio it looks...
Have you removed the oil fill cap with the engine running to see how much blowby you’re getting? And I know you said it doesn’t smell like coolant, but does the exhaust smell like normal diesel exhaust?
I really like that they include the flow graphs for those pumps. That gives a lot more information than just “free flow.” Thanks, this will be the route I go if my facet 40222 ever gives me trouble.
I have seen the individual injector lines for sale for about $60 online. Here’s one place, but you may find it cheaper if you shop around:

Here’s a question for those who know more than me: our mech fuel pump has the same mount as most ford/Chrysler/chevy V8 engines, so is it only the arm that’s different? Would it be possible to move the IDI pump arm over to a pump meant for another engine with more racing/aftermarket support? I...
My truck came to me without a fan shroud, but I wouldn’t run without a fan. I do have a champion 3 core, which may or may not make a difference. I’d like to get a shroud, just because it’s scary reaching over that fan when it’s spinning! I’m thinking of painting the tips of the fan white or...
I don’t think you can even buy the gaskets separately, only as a set. And they sure do look identical to me. Maybe ask them for part numbers for the left and right sides and watch them squirm lol.
I don’t think it’s uncommon for the manifold bolts to loosen up though. When I’ve read people’s...
How are your battery cables themselves? Try getting under the truck while someone cranks the engine and check for voltage drop at the starter. If that’s good, then I’d get a new starter. Like you read earlier in the thread, this was the fix for both me and Selahdoor.
Mike I know you have your hands full with floor pans right now, but I wanted to close the loop on what I found swapping to power doors. As I said earlier the power door harness is a standalone harness that has to be taken from the donor truck, but thankfully the plug that attaches it to the...
I’m sorry for your loss. I know from my own experiences with grief that nothing anybody says can really bring comfort in the early stages. Just know we’re thinking of you and rooting for you. It’s commendable that during this tough time for you, you thought of giving others counsel to help make...
I think most of the universal ATFs are good to go. Just make sure it lists Ford XL-12 and/or Mercon LV as one of the fluids it’s meant to replace. The “red jug” Valvoline maxlife ATF lists Ford XL-12, I have used it in the past. I have motorcraft Mercon LV in mine now, that’s what Ford...
Today I discovered a company that seems to have a solution for us. Olsons gaskets has started making a set of gaskets that is intended to be used with your old sheet metal valley pan. They don’t show the price on their website but I like the idea. I may give them a call tomorrow to see how much...
The 1356 originally took mercon fluid, but when that got phased out there was something in the later mercon generations that was causing the 1356s to grenade themselves. Ford came out with a special fluid, but now that has been phased out as well and Mercon LV is the recommended fluid from what...
Ok this thread motivated me to pull the power door harness out of my 1990 donor truck today. I’m happy to say it was super easy! It took me maybe 20-25 minutes total, and half of that time was spent trying to pry apart the electrical connectors for each door. I did not fully remove the dash, I...
I definitely recommend the oil pump mod! When I rebuilt mine the keeper arm had worn about 60% through the rib in the case. I also had to get a new planetary since mine had too much play. Definitely let us know how yours goes!
