Project: The New CDD Shop Truck

Great idea on the injectors. They are hard to come by nowadays, and the really good ones like stanadynes are very expensive lately. Your helping out the idi community! Good work.

    Block heater HOT HOT HOT

You might need a heavier duty extensiok cable. Also, all your doing is running up your electrical bill plugging in a block heater when it’s hi 40’s/lo 50’s outside. These engines don’t really need to be plugged in unless your seeing temps around 20 degrees F or less. Even then, they will start...

    fuel mileage queston

Sold the idi to my father in law a little over a year ago. Pretty much rebuilt everything on that truck and put 3.08’s in the sterling rear end. Rebuilt 6.9 & C6 transmission as well. He’s currently getting an average of 18 mpg. Truck is also a regular cab. Kinda want it back lol.

    Oil change interval

Makes sense now. It’s not true that manufacturers don’t equip their engines with these special centrifuges because they want the engines to wear out faster :bs. I got plenty of tractors that are 40+ years old without centrifuges on them that have never been rebuilt. I’m sure they do help...

    Newbie here!

Just adding my .02 here. If your looking for a very cheap and reliable vehicle, idi’s are definately the way to go. Having said that, if your not somewhat mechanically inclined and want a shop to do all of the maintenance work, these trucks will nickel and dime you to the point that you wished...

Winter is comming test your Glow plugs.

If you have to change your glowplugs every year, something is definitely wrong there. They will last years if your GPC is working properly. Push buttons are a good way to junk them quick. GP’s are very simple to test. If they glow, they are good. If they don’t, they are junk.

    ENGINE SWAP

If it’s your 1st time, a good solid two days. 2nd time, a day. 3+ times removing an idi engine, about 3-4 hours. Don’t ask how I know LOL

Current IDI Projects (need advice/come looksee for fun)

From what I understand (not a welder mind you), it’s very difficult to weld cast iron and have it be successful. My engine builder said he has done both methods quite a few times, and always prefers the lock and stitch method over welding cast iron. Cast iron is very brittle, and requires that...

Current IDI Projects (need advice/come looksee for fun)

If you really want to keep that block, I would not weld it. Take it into a good machine shop and they can probably lock n stitch that crack. Had my engine builder do that to my cylinder heads with great success.

Lil's motor is out, now where is it really leaking?

When in doubt, change it out. You pulled the engine and went thru all that work to get it out, so why not change out the rear main seal & seal up the oil pan with new rtv. I would go with an international brand rear main with Speedi sleeve. Next best would be Mahle imo. Permatex makes a great...

    1000hp hypermax idi

Your not the only one. There’s another engine build in the shadows with a similar setup, from what I understand. It has been a while since I’ve been in contact with this person, but they were working on it that last I heard which was years ago....

2 degrees or 4 degrees by turning the injection pump 1/16"

If it was that easy, we wouldn’t need timing meters that often. Really no way of telling unless you put a meter on engine. Too far advanced will burn GP tips right off I can tell you that much. If the turbo spools easier when you retarded the pump compared to where it was set earlier, I would...

    Engine oil for 7.3 idi?

Use any oil that says “diesel” on it. Hell, use any oil that says “oil” on it will work just fine lol. These engines don’t really care as long as your not filling it with water or gear oil.

7.3 IDI Turbo Knock -> Engine Pull and Rebuild

I would definitely replace the lifters especially with those comp 910 springs your putting in. Summit has a pretty good deal for sealed power lifters FYI. Don’t go with enginetech if you do end up replacing them.
  15. Hydro-idi

    Oil change interval

I wouldn’t worry about it all that much. Just make sure you got oil in the engine lol. Check every few days when you fill up. Change it when you get back from your trip & call it good. Oils nowadays are of much better quality than they used to be, and people often tend to overthink what oil to...

Purchased Inexpensive Brake Drums = Bad Idea

I would get those drums turned. It’s relatively cheap & it’ll true them up. This is somewhat common, even with new drums nowadays that are made overseas.

what coolant do you use and why?

^^^ Same here when I had my idi.

    Mis at high RPM

You have a problem with your injectors and/or injection pump. Scrap the Oreillys junk & contact Russ aka typ4 or Conestoga diesel for some good quality parts.

    Fuel not getting to engine

Using ether sparingly is always a good idea with these engines. Also make sure to disconnect the glows when you use it. Having said that, if your glowplugs aren’t working, or if there’s air in fuel lines, low voltage in batteries, etc., these engines don’t just start up like a Cummins. They are...

    Another CIA tracker device

Think you’ve been watching too many sci fi movies lol. That’s the coil that prevents the lower radiator hose from collapsing when hot. Very important that you have that installed, especially for these idi engines.

    need auto trans part

Lodi transmissions rebuilt my c6 for about 1500 a couple years back. And they put in a super low stall torque converter and beefed up a few other parts while they were in there. Also had them rebuild my 32rh in Jeep YJ. It was about them same price. I would highly recommend them if you can’t...

Converting to cup style freeze plugs

I’ve heard of guys using a socket to get the disc freeze plugs in. And once they are in, tap the center of the freeze plug with a rounded punch & hammer to help embed the edges of the plug into the block. I would imagine some sort of sealant would be a good idea to use before installing them...

HARD KNOCK AFTER LIFT PUMP REPLACEMENT

A valve cover won’t make that ticking sound. Neither will a worn lift pump lobe.

HARD KNOCK AFTER LIFT PUMP REPLACEMENT

I’ve had great luck with the stuff. You could try a couple quarts in engine oil to see if that clears it up. But.....I would strongly advise that you pull valve covers first to confirm a collapsed lifter if there is one.
