    Core plug driver

I think that trying to do anything to replace the existing design is much higher risk than just replacing the stock design plugs. Plently of engines out there with poorly put in plugs that have lasted just fine, and with reasonable care and/or the homemade tools I think there's very low risk of...

    glow plug drilling/extraction

I'd leave it alone. Having 7 of 8 plug woln't make too huge of a difference in starting, and trying to get that stub out now has a pretty high chance of turning into a head job and possibly a junk head.

ARP stud install and engine tear down

Don't use a hone - that's going to produce abrasive particles still on the walls and what doesn't stick falls down into the ring gap where you'll never get it out. Rust particles and general cleaning debris are soft enough to not really matter (excluding sand or similiar) and you'll never 100%...

    Zf5 starting in 2nd/floating gears

Pretty common to start in 2nd. Harder on the clutch, but IMHO if you're not an idiot about it there's no real ill effect. Floating gears doesn't work as well with a synco trans and can quickly kill the synchros. Works better with the heavier closer ratio trannies in MDT too.

Q: Turbo Rebuild: Replace Oil Feed Required?

No reason to unless there's damage or contamination. I suspect that a CYA in case of engine failure having caused contamination of the system which would destroy the new bearings if not fixed.... but I'm not sure how you would containimnate the feed size that badly unless the oil filter was...

Banks Kit Auto vs Manual Question

On the older non WG Banks setup both auto & manual run up the driver's side. The difference is in the pedistal/top bracket. The manual bellhousing goes straight back about 1" then drops down whereas the auto is straight down. The bracket includes the top turn of the up-pipe, and the up-pipe runs...

    CD-R replacement

You can try, but I doubt it'll change anything. The CDR really doesn't do anything but act as a safety shutoff to keep from pulling oil if you had a plugged air filter. It's setup to shut if you have a significant vaccum on the intake, as you would get with a plugged air filter, but in normal...

    Hx35 idi

Don't really have any. It's nothing fancy, just a flipped around stock exhaust header pipe and some welded up bits. Stock system would be much cleaner. Well, either you're looking at the wrong model, full of it, or I'm just lucky because it absolutely works better than the Banks WG or non WG...

Spare engine parts free for the taking

Ask Russ (TYP4) if he wants the cam. Last I talked to him he wanted cores, and wouldn't be that bad to ship just a cam. Crank is somewhere around 90-100 lb IIRC. 70 is almost certainly too low.

    US Gear exhaust brake

The small thing is a pressure switch I think. IIRC that was for the early models and discontinued later. I believe the only thing it does is a trigger a downshift light to let you know there's not much backpressure. Mine doesn't have it. For the main coil wiring, just take a test light and...

    Bricknose Towing Capacity

Remember that the manufacture's rating is just that... a rating. Doesn't mean that's really what your experince will be. Interestingly in 85 they specified GCW, not towing capacity. IIRC idi's were rated in the 13-15k GCW with the 460 being about 1000 lb higher. GCW is a better way to look at...

    Rebuild on 7.3 idi

I'd go cam over studs on a 7.3. Studs are good on the 6.9 with the smaller bolts, but on the 7.3 I don't think you need them. Cam gives a nice boost to low end, and even without a turbo it wouldn't hurt. I can't speak to Justin's cam though, I'm using the one from Russ (TYP4). Stellite is a...

    7.8l Ford Turbo diesel

Good solid motors. Definetely not junk. Parts may be harder to get for them, but I doubt it's that hard, especially since essentially the same engine was used in lots of ag applications. Might take some research, but that certainly doesn't make the engine junk. Quick search shows results for...

    Wabco air compressor vs York.

Wabco, assuming it will fit on your build and it's in better condition than it looks externally. The York (unless I'm much mistaken) isn't an air compressor, it's a AC compressor that can be used as an air compressor for certain values of reliability. Some folks have had good luck, but at the...

    d4 cat

I looked but can't find anything. I don't have a 6U/7U manual, but I do have the 4T/2U D4, D318 (which should be the same a D315) and fuel injection pump/rack setting books and none of them have anything. Closest I saw was a reference to the 'injector test stand manual' but I don't have one...

    6.9 block work

Pull the freeze plugs. Sure you can hot tank it with them in, but it will work much better with them out, plus if the block has corrosion and junk there's a decent chance the freeze plugs are also rotting. Freeze plugs aren't that hard. Yes, you are supposed to set them with a special tool, but...

    Valves recessed to far bad?

Wouldn't be too worried either way. Too much reseccion (most likely the case) will decrease the effective CR, but probably not enough to make a difference, and even if it does, lower CR is good if you're running a turbo anyway. Too little could reduce valve/piston clearance, but again I don't...

    Fan clutch upgrade...

Most likely, yes. I think both of the clutches I have were in the $2-300 range off ebay. Very rare to find them however. New price seems to be around $1000 although I'm not even sure they actually are for sale anywhere still new - that may just be an out of date listing. How much are the 6.4...

    Fan clutch upgrade...

Fan clutch 101: Viscous fan clutches are a fluid coupling, same basic idea as a torque converter. 2 rotors adjacent to each other with a fluid between them so viscosity of the fluid transfers power. There's a valve and pumping setup so that the fluid is kept generally out of the rotors when not...

    Fan clutch upgrade...

I have a thread on here from when I got mine.... https://www.oilburners.net/threads/electic-fan-clutch.70947/#post-824325 From there: Horton pn# 996127, 996135 & 996128 all seem to have the correct dimensions to work. (mostly, see below) Be careful, 996123 & 996124 are both T444E units that...

    Fan clutch upgrade...

At work so don't have time to read through the entire thread but a couple of things offhand: 1) The Horton clutch is a electro-magnetic clutch - same style as the AC compressor. It's 100% locked or freewheeling (except for a few that have permanent magnets added for a bit of drag - this is the...

    WTB: 80-86 Driver's Fender

Anyone in the PNW have a good one floating around? Tan and without any molding holes would be ideal, but I'll work with what I can find. Mine appear to have gotten crunched into a tree at some point while the tweaker had it and I haven't had time to run around finding a replacement.

US Gear Dual Range / Doug Nash Info

Different pitch or different tooth count? There's different gear tooth sounts for underdrive & overdrive varients, but the actual gear dimeteral pitch/helix angle is the same from what I could tell.

US Gear Dual Range / Doug Nash Info

Was this a 2 terminal motor, ie later USG? I have also done this with my USG (3 wire motor) and DNE2 and the gear pitch was the same.
