the insert i installed was 1.25 and the original threads were 1.5 inches longs, so the stud had enough bite on the insert. I also thought of someone tig welding the crack since the heat is localized to just the area where you are working. I dont really know until tomorrow when I get a chance to...
yeah got the tap out, it took me 2 weeks. I used a carbide bit on the end of a dremel. slowly, slowly got the tap to break apart. in the end I had to enlarge the original hole for a helical insert and I think thats what started another problem I have now...
I completely understand what you are saying, the manuals state one thing, forum friends state another and lastly ARP states another, so i did what ARP said, 125 ft lbs. Either way I look at it, Im screwed if I cant get this fixed. I will check with a welding shop tomorrow hopefully they can...
its a crack im sure, after I got the broken tap out of the same hole, I had to drill the hole larger for a helical insert, Im thinking the wall on the hole is too thin to hold the foot pounds. Also when I run my finger over the crack it has a slight bulge outwards.
Thanks for offering the plastic thingy, but Autozone is great and they gave me another gasket set since I have 1 yr warranty on the Felpro set I purchased. Thanks again.
Hello All,
Well as you have all known I have been jumping through hoops trying to get this block back together. Now I have another issue, after breaking a chasing tap in the last cylinder head hole, and after breaking head bolts, I finally got my ARP studs in and WOW another one. After...
my appoligies, I should have been more specific. The engine is sitting on a wooden pallet with supporting blocks under the engine mounts, at the same time the engine will be supported on top from a car lift arms with chains from the intake steel hooks, so it will still have room to move side to...
can someone tell me if there is a posting somewhere on how to start my 89 7.3 on the engine stand before installing it into the bronco just to make sure everything works so I do it once and not work twice. I would like to know what 12v to connect to where?
Thanks in advance.
Well my friends I have come to another hurdle, after breaking a tap in the block chasing the cylinder head threads, getting the tap out I thought I was home free. Well one more mishap. Everyone is saying that I can reuse the original cylinder head bolts on a headgasket swap, and thats what I...
I installed new exhaust valve stem seals on my 7.3 idi and the plastic protective tubing that slides over the top of the valve when installing exhaust valve stems broke, can someone tell me how to get around buying a whole new set just for the clear plastic tubing. I need to finish the drivers...
Well I have outdone myself this time, first time breaking a tap in a hole. I figured i would chase the threads and clean them up before assembly of the heads and now Im screwed. I have tapped many holes in the past from 1/8" to huge ones, and never a issue, it has to happen on a diesel engine...
Attached are 2 more clear and different angles of the piston with a chunk out of it. I just checked I used a 1/2" drive 1/2" socket to remove the head bolts. Are they reuseable, hope so.
THanks,
Hello All, let me start by thanking everyone in advance who helps me and responds to my questions. I have built many gas engines from scratch, this is my first diesel one. I picked up this '89 7.3 for a swap into my '88 bronco, and figured its best to reseal it now than later in the vehicle...
