I just replaced one on my 94 like that. It never ran hot, but I lost 3 mpg on the highway. Unfortunately I didn't notice it wasn't' unlocking till I was on a 2800 mile road trip. That 3mpg would have paid for the new clutch had I noticed before I left.
How quickly does it act up after switching tanks? If its instant, then it could very well be the switch. If it takes a couple minutes to act up I would lean toward debris in the tank clogging the showerhead, or pieces of a broken showerhead getting stuck in the fuel line.
Just to give another opinion, I really like the factory connections. They are a pain to get off sometimes, but to put them back on you just put in a new clip and push them on, they snap in place. They are so easy to get back on once the tank is in place.

Next time it happens loosen the fuel cap off the tank you are running and see if that changes anything. Those are the symptoms of a clogged tank vent that creates vaccuum and starves engine of fuel. After a couple minuted pressures equalize and things are fine again.

When I haul heavy like that, I ignore 5th gear. 4th gear with 3.55 gears is very similar to 5th with 4.10s. Its just about perfect for running 55-65 which is generally as fast as I want to go with that much weight behind me.
