Talk me out of going deeper in this motor

One more thing making me wonder about going deeper is that the exhaust has always sounded great on this truck, never a miss, pop, or tap. I thought I could hear the difference between valves and injector knocks, but now I am not sure.

Talk me out of going deeper in this motor

My 87 cab and chassis has had an engine tick for several years now. Motor is not original and I have no idea of miles. the tick is not consistent, sometimes loud and sometimes almost inaudible. On a couple occasions I have turned the motor off while in gear on the highway and have thought I...

    Fan clutch

Clutch should be stiff when cold. It takes some heat to loosen up. For me, it takes about two miles of driving for the clutch to loosen. You can hear the fan get quiet if you are running highway speeds. Yes to thread locker on the clutch, blue not red. I just use a big adjustable wrench on...

    Fan clutch

I just replaced one on my 94 like that. It never ran hot, but I lost 3 mpg on the highway. Unfortunately I didn't notice it wasn't' unlocking till I was on a 2800 mile road trip. That 3mpg would have paid for the new clutch had I noticed before I left.

I have murrays on both of my trucks. both made in the usa and work fine. I think they are repackaged haydens.

edit to my earlier post: Where I said switch I meant valve.

    Question re: fuel filter light

How quickly does it act up after switching tanks? If its instant, then it could very well be the switch. If it takes a couple minutes to act up I would lean toward debris in the tank clogging the showerhead, or pieces of a broken showerhead getting stuck in the fuel line.

Best way to replace front tank

Just to give another opinion, I really like the factory connections. They are a pain to get off sometimes, but to put them back on you just put in a new clip and push them on, they snap in place. They are so easy to get back on once the tank is in place. I have used fuel line in their place...

How's this for a scenario? Loss of power

Does it do it on both tanks?

MB OM617 powered Wrangler or VW TD powered Sidekick?

The 1.6 turbos are not uncommon. The 1.9 turbos were sold in canada I think but can also be had. But I would spend my $$ on a benz diesel. Cast iron head beats aluminum any day.

How's this for a scenario? Loss of power

I have had this happen too, on an IDI. It was a piece of showerhead. Back to the OP I hope its a vent issue, if not I had a selector valve act this way once. I still don't know why it did it, but it left us on the road several times only to come back later and have it fire right back up. I...

    OM617 4Runner

I have a donor motor, but its in a wagon parts car. The wagon's have a hydraulic pump for the suspension built into the head so they are not just drop in. My dream build is a jeep comanche and actually use the hydraulics in it. But I have let lots of comanche's pass me by over the last...

    OM617 4Runner

Is the element swap doable at home? I have never messed with these pumps, only seen the prices of the Swedish builds noted above.

How's this for a scenario? Loss of power

Next time it happens loosen the fuel cap off the tank you are running and see if that changes anything. Those are the symptoms of a clogged tank vent that creates vaccuum and starves engine of fuel. After a couple minuted pressures equalize and things are fine again.

    OM617 4Runner

The 617 can eat a lot of air if you have the pump elements to support it. Those pumps are around, but pricey.

    2 things Ive figured out

The twin i-beam fronts look like that pretty often if you stop and get out after backing up. Pull in and stop and its much less pronounced. There is something in the front end that causes it to be worse, but when it got bad with one of mine and had some death wobble to go with it, I replaced...

Confession: the MB 617 is a better motor than the IH 6.9/7.3IDI

You will have an easier time pulling power out of the 4bt. It seems like they have more aftermarket support. That said, there are folks who have made the 617 hum. Typ 4's son Brandon is one of them.

Real world turbo towing limits - chime in!

Nah, if there was an issue running in low range 5th gear I would know about it by now. Particularly around the farm I run through all my gears in low range and stay there. Towing that trailer I never reached a speed beyond what low would handle, particularly since one wheel was steel.

Real world turbo towing limits - chime in!

Oh yes. It was bad. When I started the first time the clutch got hot enough to smell, but at one point I stopped on a hill and to get moving again I had to just dump the clutch and watch the smoke billow from the transmission. It didn't help that one tire blew early in the trip so it was just...

Real world turbo towing limits - chime in!

I tried that with my 87. It did fine once we got moving, but I roasted the clutch getting it moving. The trailer I towed had been stripped inside, but was 1/2 full of square bales. I called for a police escort since had to go down a state highway. The officer looked at it and said he would...

Biting the bullet: Converting to electric fuel pump

So you replaced the racor filter on the head today with a higher micron filter? I believe the pressure at the schrader valve on the filter head is prefilter, so the only restriction on the supply side you have left could be the filter itself and you wouldn't see that supply problem on your...

Biting the bullet: Converting to electric fuel pump

Either I am not reading correctly or you have some more troubleshooting to do. IF you have 4.5 psi at the filterhead under load at WOT then you do not have a fuel delivery problem. I get your specs of the holly pump, but the transfer pump in the injection pump is what is putting the fuel to the...

Real world turbo towing limits - chime in!

When I haul heavy like that, I ignore 5th gear. 4th gear with 3.55 gears is very similar to 5th with 4.10s. Its just about perfect for running 55-65 which is generally as fast as I want to go with that much weight behind me.
