7.3 IDI w/ banks turbo overheating

You will hear it best when cold. When you start out on highway after first start of the day it should sound like a freight train and then slowly quiet as it warms up. I have tried multiple times on multiple trucks to hear it lock when towing and the engine starts to warm without a whole lot of...

7.3 IDI w/ banks turbo overheating

I think this is location specific. Montana and british columbia probably don't often see unloaded freeway trucks needing fans. Nevada, Virginia, and myself in TN do.

Is it worth buying a 7.3 with 300k miles?

I bought a 7.3 IDIT with 295K on it back in 2007. It is approaching 300K its second time now since those odometers roll back to 300. Knowing what year did they start showing 400K on the odometer might be important to that puchase? I don't know what year it was, but would assume by 03 the...

WMO centrifuge system finally up and running!

Is that a running tailpipe pic? If so I am impressed. I tried WMO but the exhaust smells so bad we ended up only using it on long highway trips. Exhaust smells much better on WVO.

    89 f350 4x4 dump need help

It sounds like the only real investment it needs is batteries and spring mounts to get running. Push button start is cheap and the flush the hydraulics out and you might be on the road to do your cleanup work. Using it would help decide whether the truck is worth a cab swap, if not put new...

    OBS Overheat!!!!

Next time you are running hot, put your hand on the top hose of radiator and compare the temp to the bottom hose. If you are hot on top and cool on the bottom, its not your radiator, its a flow issue, most likely thermostat. If you are hot on bottom and hot on top then you need to clean your...

    Clutch question

machine shop will be able to get most of that out. Cost me $60 bucks last time I had one turned.

    OBS Overheat!!!!

The Murray clutch from my local parts city is made in the USA. That was good enough for me and I have two of them working fine in different trucks right now.

    A/C System

I use this stuff in all my vehicles. https://www.es-refrigerants.com/products/w/id/31/t/134a-replacement/ It doesn't require pulling a vacuum at all. I usually do it anyway to reduce humidity in the system, but on a quick empty and refill I have skipped the vacuum and it cools fine.

Talk me out of going deeper in this motor

I have thought it was a lifter ever since purchase. What I didn't find with valve covers off was any difference in movement of any of the rockers, any noises, or difference in how the pushrods felt as the engine moved through the rotation. I guess I needed to have pulled the intake and valley...

Talk me out of going deeper in this motor

I tried MMO when I first got the truck. I have had it now for almost 3 years and its been doing this the whole time. When I had the valve covers off last week I checked everything for tightness, rolled all the pushrods around in my hand, and ran it through several revolutions with the starter...

    Re-ring...nozzle issues??? Tired of project

I use cheapo diesel compression tester from harbor freight. You have to modify the glowplug adapter for an IDI, but the injector adapter works fine. Your tick does sound similar to mine. that blowby from the oil fill is similar to all three of my IDI's. Try giving it throttle next time. The...

Talk me out of going deeper in this motor

I was using truck today at work and one of the guys was a diesel mechanic. He listened to it and said wrist pin. It always has sounded like it was coming from the driver's side lower part of the engine, but I assumed the issue was with an exhaust valve and I was just hearing it there because...

Talk me out of going deeper in this motor

I probably should have looked deeper. I grabbed and tried to move all rockers and pushrods and rotated it all the way through the rotation doing that. I probably should have removed the rockers, but when I couldn't hear it with glow plugs and valve covers off I jumped to the injector...

Talk me out of going deeper in this motor

Well, the good news is I really do know what an engine tick sounds like, bad news is after new pump and injectors, the noise is still there. It does run better. I got it timed and took it out on the road and made a video. It take any guesses as to what the noise is. I have never posted...

    Oil Pressure

40 is fine. Minimum idle spec is 7psi I believe and I have run several at that low end without issue.

    7.3 idi tac issue

Cluster will make the transmission go into limp mode. That was the issue I was working on when I replaced my cluster. I had just rebuilt my E4OD and it kept throwing tach sensor code and going into limp mode. The guy who built the transmission replaced the cluster to get it to work. The tach...

    7.3 idi tac issue

I think he is referring to the gap between the tac sensor and the pump gear, though I am not sure what would change that other than maybe a thick gasket on the timing cover. I had this problem on a truck about 10 years ago. After changing sensors several times I changed the instrument cluster...

Injector Cap Leak/Damaged Injector 6.9 IDI

I would remove the injector before trying to file or sand it. You don't want those filings to get in your injection system. I just pulled my entire injector collection off the shelf and sorted and tested them for a truck I am working on this past weekend. Depending on where you are in TN you...

Talk me out of going deeper in this motor

Injector pop testers are cool. Someone gave me one a couple months ago and this is the first time I have spent any time using it. My set of rebuilt injectors were part of the uhaul inventory sold on ebay several years ago. As others said at the time they are not great. Many leaked and had...

Talk me out of going deeper in this motor

I have a 6.9 sitting in another cab and chassis that is "mothballed" in my back yard. My issue is too many projects. I tend to do what it takes to keep them on the road when I need them, and never get far past that stage. The 87 I am working on right now has a 12 foot pto dump on it so its a...

Talk me out of going deeper in this motor

This is what I woke up thinking. I WAS sure it was in the engine, only way to find out is to put it back together I guess. I have replaced the entire exhaust since purchasing including the downpipe. I have also put a clutch in it with all the associated goodies and had the single mass flywheel...
