    '90 F350 Crewcab 4x4 "BFTD" Project..

Made good progress tonight... about 2 1/2hrs and the heads were on the shop floor. Would have been sooner but we ran into some issues that I was afraid of. The severe rust on this engine had eaten away the points on a couple of the lower outermost head bolts to the point where they were...

    Greaseable or sealed ball joints?

Moog sadly moved a lot of their manufacturing overseas and quality has suffered a bit. Raybestos Professional seems to be more on par as far as quality goes. Not sure if Spicer makes greaseable balljoints... I know they offer both flavors of u-joints but not sure on other components.

Did not know that! Thanks for the info.

    Transmission compatibility

Small block (not sure about the 300) and IDI bellhousing patterns are different. If it was a 460 truck, it could be made to work but its not a bolt in either way.

    Greaseable or sealed ball joints?

O.. and as far as brands go... Spicer all the way. Moog quality has gone down hill as of late.

    '90 F350 Crewcab 4x4 "BFTD" Project..

Shipping was $137.. lol They had a price written on them in paint marker from the machine shop... 781.00 I certainly couldn't have afforded that and the truck would have probably been parted out if that was the case.. that or another engine. I'm glad the guy was willing to take a...

    Greaseable or sealed ball joints?

Its mainly preference. If you plan to be off the pavement or in deep water, etc... I would go greaseable. I prefer them either way but sealed ones last just as long from talking to my driveline guy when kept on the pavement.

Heads came in and look to be in good shape. They were ran for approximately 6 hours before they discovered the block was cracked. Doesn't look to have any odd wear or any valve contact with anything that they shouldn't be contacting... lol Going to clean them up when I get home. Just...

    '90 F350 Crewcab 4x4 "BFTD" Project..

As far as the crush washers are concerned, it's not the money.. It's the wait. It would be next week before I can get them.. Planning on new injectors in a couple weeks before I start really driving the truck anyways so just want to make sure it's gonna run. That's the reason I want to...

    '90 F350 Crewcab 4x4 "BFTD" Project..

Quick question.... would it be ok to reuse my injector crush washers? I've only had them in the engine for a couple weeks and 2 or 3 short run times. I'm replacing the heads this weekend and don't want to have to order them and wait on them. I'll be replacing injectors in a few weeks if...

Truck won't start need help please???

That could be part of it. As for jumping the solenoid, one of the lugs is the trigger wire for the starter. One of the lugs is battery hot. Jump between those 2 lugs with a piece of loose wire or a screw driver. Make sure it's not in gear as the starter will engage.. Doing this bypasses...

Truck won't start need help please???

Clutch wont keep the truck from starting. Clutch safety switch could... but the clutch itself wont. (unless there are teeth missing on the flywheel ring gear)

Truck won't start need help please???

Sounds like a starter solenoid issue to me... but bypass the switch as described above. If that doesn't work, grab a hammer and tap on the starter motor and see if that makes a difference. If no... jump the solenoid on the fender and see if that works. If jumping the solenoid on the...

    '90 F350 Crewcab 4x4 "BFTD" Project..

Had some spare time tonight so I went on and stripped the accessory drive off... Now hopefully wednesday night I can get a couple hours to pull the heads and maybe, if all goes well, sit the new heads on thursday evening. I'll have a few hours thursday night and then a good bit of the...

    4bt jeep tj

I think you'll like the he351 more then the 341. The 341 is somewhat small and as a single, has been known to run hot (EGT wise)... not sure how it would perform as an atmosphere charger. Good luck bud!

    DIY valve guides?

That would be fun. Hope to get it street worthy long before summer hits.

    '90 F350 Crewcab 4x4 "BFTD" Project..

Cylinder heads, valley pan, and head gaskets are on the way. I called the machine shop that rebuilt the heads and they told me what all was done to them. They were pressure tested, springs tested, exhaust valve guides replaced, intake guides inspected (were in spec), new exhaust valves...

    DIY valve guides?

Just gave them a call... Guy was able to pull up the records of them being rebuilt. They were pressure tested, springs tested, exhaust valve guides replaced, intake guides inspected (were in spec), new exhaust valves, surfaced, and a full valve job. I asked how many IDIs they get up there...

    DIY valve guides?

That's one of the reasons I jumped on these as quickly as I did. From everything I've been reading, they have a very extensive back ground in industrial and diesel applications as well as antique engine machining. Everyone I've talked to said their work is top notch. I may give them a call...

    DIY valve guides?

Thanks for the info. I ended up buying a set of heads that were rebuilt by Hart's Machine in Ohio. I couldn't have mine cleaned and pressure tested locally for what I paid for both heads shipped. Guy seems honest enough but I'll know for sure in a couple days when they get here.

Looks good bud! I've got a compounded 4bt in my Tahoe which is my daily driver. Love it. Is that an HX27 on the manifold or a 30? I'm running a 30/35 setup and couldnt be happier with how it performs.

    '90 F350 Crewcab 4x4 "BFTD" Project..

Nah... that was my first truck. Its an 83 K10 I've had since I was 15... Now it sits :( That truck was my first engine build... first automatic trans build... had a lot of fun in that truck and got in a lot of trouble.. I really should sell it before it rots to the ground but I...

    '90 F350 Crewcab 4x4 "BFTD" Project..

Well.. finally some good news (I think...) Got a set of heads that were rebuilt by Harts Machine for a steal... Guy had them rebuilt a few years back for his son's truck and afterwards, found the block to be cracked so they ended up finding a used engine and putting these on a shelf in...

    Ticking coming from exhaust...?

Throttle cable wasnt hooked up at the time and the tapping is coming directly from the exhaust pipe. The sound moved back as I installed the exhaust on the truck. I think I'll have a set of heads coming my way tomorrow. Will know for sure by tomorrow afternoon. Thanks for the input guys...
