True... but wouldn't compressor wheel contact with the housing make really ugly noises (and very little boost)?
I'll definitely check - it was above spec but no contact when I installed it - but still don't know how critical a small exhaust leak might be vs. the effect of excessive radial play?
Yes, I know this is an old thread ;) I'm curious to know if the OP fixed his problem, and how much it improved the boost?
A little background on mine: I put a used factory turbo setup on my 7.3 NA IDI (including a little Ultra Copper RTV on the slip joint). It made the stock 7 psi with the fuel...
I've looked pretty closely at the pulley alignment and they seem to be ok. Just the idler wants to run near the edge.
I have also read about out-of-round vacuum pump pulleys causing the chirp, but to a finger I can't detect significant runout.
Unfortunately I have had my experiences with parts...
Thanks :) Hard to find anything except what Autozone and O'Reilly carry (unless I mail-order of course).
Also components I replaced are: water pump, a/c compressor and clutch, alternator and vacuum pump... this truck had been really neglected when I bought it!
Not much left except p/s pump...
I thought I'd fixed it for good about 3-4K miles ago... my '93 has the "good" (shock) tensioner installed, but both the idler and the tensioner pulleys needed new bearings so I replaced them. Also a new 111.5" belt which was difficult to put on without partially unbolting the alternator, but...
Glad to hear it after reading this whole thread :) ... Now, how well is it running? Adequate power? No coolant & oil mixing? Easy to start? Burning lots of oil? Strange noises? etc.
Would be interesting to see compression numbers now ;)
My power steering is starting to make a whirring or buzzing noise when the steering wheel is turned. The fluid level is correct - that's the first thing I thought to check! The assist seems to work correctly.
Is there a filter screen somewhere that needs inspection and cleaning? Or another...
I rebuilt the t-case myself after buying the truck (previous owner had either run the wrong oil or it hadn't been changed since new, and when I drained it, pieces of plastic came out which I learned were shift fork pads). All new bearings and seals, did the oil pump case mod... Although it's...
Thanks for the tips. I'll check the joints when I get home at the end of this week - assuming it's not raining or snowing as usual this time of year ;)
Definitely just a u-joint, not a CV joint on that driveshaft.
We've had some snow, ice, and rain recently, and it's about 2.5 miles on dirt & gravel (now mud) roads to get to pavement, so I locked the front hubs on my '93 IDI but stayed in 2H.
I got to the highway without using 4WD and didn't bother to get out and unlock them. Transfer case stayed in 2H...
Drove it in the rain to get annual state inspection. Passed.
I need to tighten the steering box some more - it'd probably never been touched before. Don't have the spare $ right now for a Red Top.
Monster truck engines tend to turn just a few more RPMs than our IDIs though ;)
The Roots blower is indeed inefficient (and the physical design makes it hard to intercool, too). Not to mention heavy and noisy. But it sure looks neat  and does have a linear boost curve compared to a...
Got the headlight retaining clips at O'Reilly (had to go to both stores since each only had one pack of 2, Dorman 42190). They are fairly thin and soft metal, but slid firmly into place using needle nose pliers (I finally got to use my super-long pliers, on the bottom outer clip).
Didn't have to...
Nope. Anything after the turbo outlet will just make more noise. If anything, the lower restriction would possibly make MORE boost.
How do you know it's spooling?
Is your boost gauge actually working?
Today I went to change the right headlight assembly (broken top outer mounting tab, annoying bouncing beam). First I discovered my SO had given the keys to my handyman who is also my ex's son since he'd done some work while I was out of town. Couldn't find the spare keys anywhere. Got hold of...
I think it would be a lot safer to pull the truck in, shut it off and set the parking brake, THEN put the seafoam in :rotflmao
Probably doesn't hurt anything but I'm not sure it really does much either. Every brand of additive has its fans...
At the last oil change, I put 3 gal. of old diesel...
$20 worth? In CA I thought that would only buy a "spray a little behind my ear" quantity... :sly
So 4-5 gallons of diesel and you're putting 220 ml (almost 8 oz.) isn't that about four times what the manufacturer recommends? :dunno
It works great for me too, better than any brand of panther piss I've tried!
The idea (I think) is that the acetone acts as a thinner "carrier liquid" to get the ATF into places it wouldn't normally flow. The two parts separate out fairly fast, so you have to shake then spray.
I use a...
I have learned over the years to do part of their job for them... whenever I walk into a chain store, I already have the part number, know it's in stock at that location, AND bring the old part with me to compare ;)
Drained the 2.5 gallons of diesel from the oil pan. Even after 48 hrs. soaking, it wasn't very dark. Which I guess is a good thing. Put in 9.5 quarts of new 15W-40, punched a hole in the filter and removed it, installed a new FL-1995, added another quart, cranked the engine for about 30 sec...
