WARNING about King Main Thrust Bearings

I happen to be working on the engine today. So I got the measurements you and I both were wondering about. Looks like these pass the test. I've got a dial bore gauge so I am definitely going to test fit all bearing fit ups. Appreciate the effort in this. My old bearings actually look just fine...

WARNING about King Main Thrust Bearings

I'm in the process of freshening my '94 IDI engine. Just last week I ordered and received a set of standard Mahle/Clevite main bearings, part no. MS-1596P from Rock Auto. But I bought Enginetech connecting rod bearings. Now you got me wondering. I have to definitely mic every bearing and its fit...

Questions regarding Keystone rings and cam

I'm restoring and updating a '94 factory turbo dually. I'm at the point of freshening up the seals and gaskets and painting the engine. Upon inspection, I found a cam lobe going bad. Didn't plan on this but I now have an excuse to get the type4 "logger" cam. I've emailed Oregon Cams directly to...

    ZF5 Gasser to Diesel Conversion

Final view of finished job. I feel very comfortable with the operation as it went quite smoothly. Bolt hole location is important, but dowel pin holes need to be spot on.

    ZF5 Gasser to Diesel Conversion

Bolt hole piloted with 5/32 .156 drill. Bolt hole drill is 35/64 .547. You will need a aircraft drill (long shank) as you need to drill through 2.0 inches of aluminum bolt boss. Had to turn down shank of drill to .500 to fit my drill motor.

    ZF5 Gasser to Diesel Conversion

Adapter dowel pin hole gages at .377, reamer used .377. This works perfectly, as 3/8 dowel pin is pressed in engine block, adapter fits over pin at .377, so using adapter as drill jig/drill bushing works well at keeping things square and properly located.

    ZF5 Gasser to Diesel Conversion

So I just finished my modification of my ZF5 yesterday. I was always a bit apprehensive about doing this. Concerned about shaft alignment. There is really no good way to indicate shaft to bolt hole/dowel pin location. I studied threads on this site and others. The top two holes in the bell...

    7.3idi turbo vs 7.3idi

That's interesting. I was always under the impression that the turbo block was a bit beefier. I'm about to examine and reseal my IDIT engine as I am getting ready to install it back into my rebuilt/painted chassis. While I have the heads off (for studs), and oil pan, I'll give a look at the webs...

    7.3idi turbo vs 7.3idi

I'm restoring a 1994 IDIT extra cab dually right now. I have been researching about the IDIT engine over the past few months. In regard to Stukas original post, there does appear to be a block difference. I found this article from a website www.engine-builder.com. Probably unless your going for...

This video has me really worked up!

I'm restoring a 1994 IDIT Dually. This video got me really worked up. Take a look and let me know how or what you feel about this. This truck most likely is my last truck -- I'm 72. Plan to keep it till I croak. All this regulation nonsense just P..... me off! I'm hoping more sane heads will...

Can I remove just this dash panel?

I have mine apart right now. Remove the glove box and you need to remove the radio from the dash. Then if you reach up back behind thru these openings, you should find some studs with tinnerman nuts, I think 10mm. Probably like 6 of them. A 1/4 inch swivel ratchet and short socket should work to...

I think I'll keep my 7.3 as long as I can!

I stumbled on to this video by Gale Banks which was very interesting to watch. I never really payed too much attention to the current crop of modern diesels out there. This was amazing to watch. No wonder it costs thousands of dollars to work on the new trucks, and why they are so crazy...

    Convert ZF5 2WD to 4WD---Is it Possible?

Nero, thank you for that link. That fella gave a great explanation of fitting a ZF6 to an IDI. I get it now. I saved it to a file for future reference. So it can be done. It's something I would relish doing since I have the tools, but I think I need to temper my excitement and realize that I...

    Convert ZF5 2WD to 4WD---Is it Possible?

Franklin2, I just want to confirm something. Any transmission bolted to a 7.3 Powerstroke will also bolt to a IDI 7.3 and vice a versa, true? So if true, the Zf6 should bolt directly to the '94 IDI. What modifications are you referring to? I'm assuming trans mount, maybe transfer case bolt...

    Convert ZF5 2WD to 4WD---Is it Possible?

Also found this. ZF6. 6 speed. Ad says from a 2001 7.3 F-550 4x4. Any big advantage to go this route? Did not even know there was a 6 speed for these trucks. Wow... pretty cool only thing is you will be doing a lot of rowing, which is not a bad thing. I was wondering about the gearing and how it...

    Convert ZF5 2WD to 4WD---Is it Possible?

Franklin2, Like this one? So a BW1356 transfer case will bolt up to this once brake is pulled off, splines match? If so, this one is just down the road from me here in Melbourne, FL.

    Convert ZF5 2WD to 4WD---Is it Possible?

I just picked up two trucks...well one and a half really. Complete '94 dually is factory turbo VIN K unmolested automatic. The '92 parts truck has ATS turbo, manual 2WD. I'm wanting to make the dually 4x4 manual. I'm looking now for a late 90's super duty axle (Dana 60) which I intend to install...

Interesting video on motor oil, diesels, piston rings

I don't know if any of you follow Dave's Auto on you tube, but I ran across this one in particular that was fascinating to listen to. A lot of the discussion revolves around diesels. When Lake Speed Jr. started to discuss keystone rings I really started to listen. Never understood their purpose...

Help with unconnected wire under the hood, ‘94 F350 7.3 IDI turbo diesel.

Your welcome. I'm glad I could pay it back and help someone out. This forum has been my go to for learning more about these trucks/engines as I have only become a "diesel head" 3-4 years ago. I love the fact that these trucks really are pretty dirt simple. Once you learn the basics on how they...

Help with unconnected wire under the hood, ‘94 F350 7.3 IDI turbo diesel.

Ok, I took another look at it a bit ago. On my harness, it come out of the smaller harness laying on the wheel inner wheel well going to the front under the starter relay. Kizer is right, on mine, it leaves that smaller harness, goes to the male connector, leaves from the female connector and to...

Help with unconnected wire under the hood, ‘94 F350 7.3 IDI turbo diesel.

I got a '94 turbo truck very similar to yours. So while I was under the hood I snapped some pictures, since we probably have the same/similar wiring harness. Can't really tell you what that wire is for, don't have a wiring diagram, but as you see in the pictures, black with 2 yellow tracers goes...

Anything wrong with adapting a 1997 powerstroke turbo to my NA 7.3 IDI?

Thanks for the input. I have been looking for an ATS 093 in any condition since I got the truck, no luck so far. I actually picked up from a junk yard the air box for one, but no turbo assembly. So now I am kind of warm to trying the Holset HX35W with maybe a 120mm exhaust housing. I have found...

Anything wrong with adapting a 1997 powerstroke turbo to my NA 7.3 IDI?

I've got a VIN K 1994 7.3 truck. When I got it, it had no turbo. From the factory it should have had one. For whatever reason, previous owners eliminated it. I'm driving it just fine as a NA truck. A friend has a 97 DI Powerstoke turbo setup sitting around and is willing to give it to me. Now...

    Sudden loss of oil

I'll chime in here and relate what I experienced. I was using a lot of oil, blow by etc. I agree with the push it hard recommendation. Give Marvel a try. My blow by is much less and oil consumption is down considerably. My compression now is roughly 5-10 psi higher across all cylinders now. I...
