    1st post. Advice on safely re-starting a 94 7.3

Drain it, fill with oil and fire it up? It hasn't mixed in with the oil, which means it came from sitting, not running - If it was leaking while the engine was running, the water and oil would become 'milkshake'. Then, check the cowl seal and air cleaner seal. Air cleaner wingnut tends to leak.

Glow plugs on too long... but not getting too hot?

OK, so I've got an interesting one here: In my 93, the glow plugs stay on for a very very long time before cycling. Like, I can turn the key on, hear GPC click on. Wait for 10 seconds, WTS light goes out. GPC still on. Wait for another 30 or so seconds... GPC finally clicks off and that's it. No...

It's rainwater from the cowl leaking into the intake.

Is this IDI the right truck for me?

I personally wouldn't pay 7K, but I'm not a good sample - I haven't paid more than 2K for any IDI I own, but only one of them was bought in "can drive cross country" condition... and that one(the 93) has a *ton* of cab rust. Also, none are crew cabs, and those always fetch more money.

BEST and WORST water pumps, gaskets?

The new water pump will come with bolts for these, and the casting has been modified such that these are now the same length as all the other (short-size) bolts. And yeah, I suppose sealer is good. I've never worried about it, to be honest. I'm not sure if I've ever noticed a drop coming from...

That's not an oil leak. It's rust proofing!

Is this IDI the right truck for me?

So for future reference, "excessive blow by" is the normal state for IDIs. They were designed with very large ring gaps, and because of that produce a ton of blow by when when brand new/freshly rebuilt. That's one thing that you don't need to worry about at all - it's not a Cummins! I'll add...

BEST and WORST water pumps, gaskets?

I've replaced 4-5 of them on different trucks so far(old ones looked pretty ancient; possibly original). I just went with Autozone because it was convienient. No issues so far. Gasket wise, I make sure to wire-wheel the metal surface of the front cover and get any crud I can off, then use a...

Draining ALL the oil from block, not just the pan?

I'm not the most experienced with doing things 'right', because I haven't had that much money. However, what I can tell you is: What I find is that as long as you keep oil in it, very little goes wrong generally. Most of the motors that I've gotten as "oh, it needs a rebuild", is usually fuel...

    Head gaskets???

In my '93, it took months to go from "bubbles in the overflow on shutdown after a long hot pull with a trailer" to "bubbles when running, cloud of white coolant smoke". It just finally gave out completely one day. Replaced head gaskets, problem solved* (*note: this motor is in my tan '88 after...

    Disposing of old antifreeze?

Also, most coolant is ethylene glycol not propylene glycol. EG is more toxic than PG by far. PG is used as "food safe" antifreeze - used for RV water lines, in tanker trucks that use coolant for heating the tankers, and in your lettuce at Subway!

Draining ALL the oil from block, not just the pan?

With an IDI at least, I would re-use the cam if it didn't look worn. IDIs use roller lifters, and I've seen cams that looked brand new coming out of multi-hundred-K motors. As long as you have oil in it, and the lifter doesn't rotate or disintegrate, the cam isn't going to wear at all. Also...

    Cheap pyrometer

I'm quite happy with my Auber gauges. I like the green ones, but leave it on dim all the time. Also, it might be a little bright even then; some gray shade film should darken it a bit.

What is the value of my truck for private party sale?

Obviously it depends on the area of the country, but I personally think it's worth in the $500-1k range. Looking at it objectively: 1. At the end of the day, 6.9 and 4-speed, single cab Nothing special. At least it's 4x4, which is worth something. 2. Crummy paint job, again, nothing special. 3...

You won't grenade the motor. Worst case, you'll blow the head gaskets and have them start to leak combustion gasses into the coolant.

Draining ALL the oil from block, not just the pan?

Yeah, honestly... I think we are really talking about <1 quart on an IDI, based on my experiences pulling these apart. Just drain the pan, remove oil filter, install 7.3 PSD/FL1995 oil filter and refill with 11 quarts of oil and be done with it. Edit: Just to point out - Even after 5k or so...

Built 7.3 Idi Turbo fuel pump

It's exactly what I meant. Lets take this example here: https://www.harborfreight.com/lawn-garden/pumps/16-hp-submersible-utility-pump-1600-gph-63319.html This pump can produce 1600 GPH. It has a maximum lift of 25 ft. However, at 25ft, it's not going to be producing 1600GPH... It's going to be...

This seems likely. Probably a head gasket.

I'm going to bring this back up as your most likely cause. Small head gasket leak probably.

Squealing under hood when wheels turned all the way left

Check for tension on your serpentine belt. Possibly replace it with one 1/2" shorter, if it will fit.

Squealing under hood when wheels turned all the way left

These IDIs have a C2 power steering pump. They like to whine quite a bit, especially if thinner fluid is used. You are supposed to be using Type F ATF in your PS reservoir, not Power Steering Fluid, which is thinner.

7.3 IDI NA White smoke and misfiring on cold start and under load

You changed your injectors with ones that aren't worn. This means that instead of the pump trying to push into, say, 1200psi, it's pushing into 1800 PSI. This obviously retards the timing much more than it was before(which was retarded). Get a new IP and time it correctly. Good timing is the...

Built 7.3 Idi Turbo fuel pump

The problem is that most of the fuel going through the IP is returned to the tank - quite a lot ends up used for lubrication and cooling of the IP. Part of the problem of the electric pumps, is that you need to find one that can output a large number of GPH at a given pressure. Not, say, 5 PSI...

    return lines left me stranded

You can also do what I've done before: Using the 1/4" caps and a 1/4 brass tee, completely replace the system. At the rear on both corners, run a line to the other side of the motor. Insert a tee into this rear crossover, that goes back to the fuel return hose down the back of the motor. String...

Water pump seal & plain water coolant?

Speaking of leak-detection, the coolant I use on my IDIs - Zerex HD ELC coolant - is red. When it dries somewhere, it leaves behind a very distinctive white/pink residue. It's very easy to see where things have weeped. I think the Zerex G-05 gold coolant does something similar, though the color...
