    Rear Axle Question

I'd probably just pull open the differential and check the gears out. Unless something is actually damaged, just buy a new set of gears and swap them in. Heck, you can do what I did and just get a "crush sleeve eliminator" and "shim kit" for a stirling 10.25 and simply shim the ring and pinion...

Slide in camper owners: what's your mpg?

I personally do not like the K&N style filters as far as I can throw them. They rely on a thin layer of oil to actually keep dirt out of the engine, and fill up rapidly. If you let them go too long, they will let dirt through(because the oil isn't trapping it anymore). Realistically, a paper...

    EC-1 coolant in IDI?

This is why you find an ELC coolant that uses alternate chemicals in it, like the Zerex G-05 coolant I mentioned. It contains mainly sodium nitrite as an additive, which doesn't affect much. There are other minor concentrations of stuff that might, but nothing that is "not recommended" for...

Tapping sound on my 7.3 idi

Change the oil every 2.5k miles or so, and add a quart or two of MMO. Mine ticks a lot worse if I let the oil change go much longer, and the marvel mystery oil does seem to help a bit.

    EC-1 coolant in IDI?

I use Zerex G05 or Zerex HD ELC coolants. Both good cavitation protection, DOES NOT NEED SCAs, long life and decently available. I also checked - they don't have issues with older seal materials.

Altitude affecting Turbo IDIT causing smoke?

If you want the most power out of the truck without smoke, Hypermax's smoke puff limiter is what you want. It's an "aneroid" for the IP - basically limits maximum fuel(metering valve travel) based on boost. No boost = less fuel. And it's fully adjustable.

Do People Buy 7.3 IDI Engines?

I'm also far away from you, but I'll always buy a running 6.9/7.3 for $200 range.

    Building a better db2

So this is with locked advance and 'tuned' transfer pump? Personally, I'm more interested in how much fuel you can maintain at 2500-3500 RPM, mainly because that seems to be where the engine does best in terms of airflow. At 1500 RPM, I rarely see anything out of a "stock"/"kit" turbo. I'm...

Head gasket is most likely I think.

    RDT smoke?

Just be ready with the chain or trailer for when his (powerful but fragile) 6.0 needs a tow home or to the shop... ;)

    RDT smoke?

A *ton*. This is why older Cummins motors may have RDTs, but 6.9/7.3 IDIs(as well as 6.2/6.5 Chevy IDIs) have CDRs. Our IDIs have large ring gaps by design. Tons of blowby is totally normal.

    Banks egt gauge

The sensor should be a K-type thermocouple. It's what's used in almost all EGT probes. The length of the wires doesn't matter, really; what matters is that any junctions in the wires use the same metal(each wire of the thermocouple is a different alloy; you must keep the same alloy on each wire...

    Lift pump

There are two styles of arms, one straight and one... not. Both are just fine. Just make sure to get the straight style in under the cam - as long as you put it in place by angling it downward and in, then "up" and bolting it in, you should be fine.

    Cdr won’t come out

You are going to need a new grommet no matter what; it's so hard by now it's not going to be sealing well at all. Also, I personally wouldn't worry about the CDR - the CDR is supposed to be wide open 99% of the time; the only time it closes is if you somehow manage to clog the air filter badly...

    Cold timing advance

With a manual setup, you *might* be able to get away with Autolites. They absolutely do not work with the proper time/controller. They also have this annoying tendancy to swell/bulge, making them hard to remove(It's due to too much moisture inside the glow plug itself as it's being...

    Cold timing advance

If you wire it up like the above picture, including converting to the 7.3-style glow plug controller and glow plugs, the entire motor becomes "one wire" to run - you have battery main feed to the glow plug controller's primary terminal, a single feed of switched power to the top of the motor...

    Electronic fuel pump conversion

It will work, at least at low RPM. Install it if you want, then put a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel filter such that you can measure it going down the road. Make sure you aren't dropping down below 1 PSI or so at WOT. I keep seeing flow issues with cheap electric pumps - about the only...

    Gutless and IP adjustments

Yeah, you won't know actual fuel pressure until you have a gauge you can read while under WOT going up a hill. Big difference in fuel between revving and max fuel usage under load. And no, I'd bet that it is nowhere near adequate enough. IDIs need a ton of fuel at WOT.
  19. Macrobb

    Gutless and IP adjustments

Did you check fuel pressure? Make sure it's staying above 0 at WOT. (For reference, even with a RD2-110 oversized IP, I've seen 4 psi at idle, 3 at WOT with a stock mechanical lift pump. Much better regulation than from my dad's Duralift, which goes to 0(or below) at WOT)

7.3IDI, move heater supply outlet to driver side

Yeah, all those plugs are threaded, the same size, and replacable. You can use those plugged spots for coolant(heater core etc), or for a sensor. The heads are identical left to right, BTW - any port on the left front will be on the right rear of the motor and vice-versa.

Extending coolant change interval (switching coolants)

I run Zerex HD ELC coolant myself. Also Zerex G-05 Gold coolant is similarly spec'd. Both are excellent at preventing cavitation-corrosion, don't destroy old seals, and boast a 3-5 year rating. Remember, the reason it's an ELC is because of the fancy anti-cavitation/corrosion compounds in...

7.3IDI - how much fuel flow on supply line and return?

Pull the return line off the IP, run it into a bucket of known size. Idle the engine and count the amount of time it takes to fill that. You can then calculate the minimum GPM(figure up to 5X that at higher RPMs?) The flow from injectors is no more than a drop in the bucket; the IP returns a...

    commercial 7.3

As long as you change the oil on a regular basis, *any* IDI can look like that. It's the #1 thing I believe in with an IDI - 3K or so mile changes(oil quality doesn't matter - cheap is fine. It's changing it to get the crud out of it). Also, if you've still got that IHC oil pan and pickup, hang...

Aftermarket turbos for banks Up Pipes

S360 with a .63 exhaust housing is nice. It'll make 25 PSI without issue. Just make sure you've got studs. Also, remember that nothing else will bolt up - you'll need a new downpipe or adapter, new piping to intake, and an adapter for air cleaner/CDR elbow(ebay coupler).

    Hydroboost 2019

I did this about 5 years ago, over on FTE: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1306283-how-not-to-do-hydroboost.html Used a '03 E-450 hydroboost unit, the stock pedal, MC, PS pump etc. Needed all new lines and significant mods. See that topic for details. It's still working as well as the day I...
