    I dont buy diesel at the fuel stations.....I get mine out of a big red tank full of "miscellaneous stuff", owned by a shady/sketchy character......it has all sorts of lubrication properties.....hehehehe.....

    Yeah, try to score a donor truck for sure......nuttin to it.....ill add that with a zf5 in front of 3:55 gears, 1st and reverse will be basically miserable. If you can score a 4wd Zf5, you could click it in low if you're backing out of a parking space, or maneuvering in tight quarters...

    Yeah, the contractor i worked for had a couple trucks with Cummins and it is crazy loud sitting on top of one of those.....in an aluminum box....you can keep it.

    Certainly check the timing. Test the injectors maybe, before you buy.....unless you just want new ones. And a compression test wouldn't hurt for sure....ultimately, you got some type of fueling issue.....its a diesel, thats all it can be unless a rod is hanging out the side of the engine.

    It's cranking up that im talking about, not running under load. If it comes to life easy, the timing can't be too far away (in my experience/opinion). I have a suspicion that the popping and smoke is fuel being sprayed in during the power and exhaust stroke.......but wait for the knowledgeable...

    Cool... The timing could be off a bit, but if it cranks up good....that makes me "feel" like the timing ain't too bad.....next im guessing maybe there's stuck injectors making the white smoke.....but wait for more of the pros to chime in. Don't stop believin'.....

    Welcome to the forum! Im gonna say it's a timing thing.....ill go so far as saying that its 180* out of time, or Possiblytheinjectorlines are in the wrongorder...does it crank up easy and just run? Or do you have to do an "elaborate starting procedure"? But stick with it, these guys...
