When you all go around to collect your oils...(WVO & WEO) what do you use for a pump? There are a couple of alternatives... I have used a hand crank pump as you would put into a drum. there are also 12v and 110v water pumps. Both of which require a power source. Do you bring a generator along to run your 110v water/oil/*** pump. I'm heading out to get some heating oil that someone wants to get rid of. And getting to the tank could be a challenge. But for regular use it would be sucking oil out of some garage/repair shop WEO tank.

I use a 1 hp 120 v transfer pump from lowes with 50 foot water hose.
made a pickup tube with 3/4 pvc , 3/4 foot valve and 3/4 water hose
shut off on supply end of hose. will fill 55 gal drum in less than 30 min.
I have moved 150 gal at one time.

i got that same hand crank pump and i have the harbor freight clear water pump. the clear water pump is slow. it takes about 20-30 mins to fill a 55 gallon drum. it is also a pain to purge the air out of.

i actaully set up a pulled on the hand crank pump and might try hooking it up to a motor for a cheep set up.

I swap 55 gal drums, using my Tommy lift tailgate. Best thing I ever had on a truck! I also use a "drum cart", which I picked up used for $35.

Using a 100 or 200 gallon propane tank... All you need is a small gas powered air compressor and hook the intake up to the top of the tank with a check valve and vent the compressor by opening the water bleed valve on the bottom.... It will pull it down to about 25 or 27 inches-vacuum in a couple of minutes... Then you just insert the hose and open the valve.
I am building a mobile oil change rig this way and it is very effective and simple... No pump to get clogged or rebuild >>> Just straight in and straight out. ;Sweet
When you want to drain the tank... you just reverse it and pump it out just as fast or faster... it is a pressure vessel so you don't have to worry about it bursting because it will take over 200 PSIG >> If you go that high though... Make sure you have a friend with a video camera because that is going to be hilarious!!! :rotflmao

I just set up a 200 Gallon Propane cylinder today for sucking up used motor oil... It is very simple!
I just welded feet on the top and flipped it upside down >> Welded a 1/2 fitting on the new top for air and vacuum.... Stubbed out a 3/4" fitting on the bottom for the hose.

Then you just hook up the air line to the air compressor intake to pull a vacuum >> It takes about 5 min's to pull a vacuum with a small "hotdog" style compressor and about 3 mins with my bigger compressor...

Nice thing is after you pull a Vacuum... You don't need to have anything running to suck up the oil >> You just turn a valve

I have a mobile oil change company and I am using this method fo rmy new service trailer.... I have used every kind of pump and they all have one thing in common.... They break down! This way there is NO moving part... No Diaphragms or check valves to get clogged with crap... No Filters to clean out... No Air motors to freeze up... No O-rings to break...
Just 3/4" straight in and straight out... Beautiful!!

On top of all that >> The Propane company gave me the old tank because the feet were rusted out and it was wobbly... I was able to salvage 80 Gallons of Propane out of it transferring it to smaller tanks for my BBQ pit and RV... >> That is over $200 worth of propane!!

Sorry it has been a while since I've looked at this thread. The vacuum pumps we use are 12volts wired to a switch then to a battery that is trickle charged from our trucks. With the extra valving we added we can pressurize the tank using the same pumps to empty the tank. I'l; try to get a pic this weekend. Keith
