If you wanted to rebuild a 7.3 idi, increase it's performance w/o a turbo, what would you do?

The best I ever could get was mid 10mpg in the summer and 8mpg in the winter, drove like a grandpa made no difference, this was with a zf5, 4.10 and 35” tires, tried 3 different IP’s and made no difference, tried timing from 6-12degrees didn’t help either. In the end I found my expectations had...

If you wanted to rebuild a 7.3 idi, increase it's performance w/o a turbo, what would you do?

Turbo also helps with elevation, if I remember right, every 1000ft is -3% in power, if your at 5000ft that’s -15% right of the bat, just some food for thought. Not sure what your hoping for power and your expectation but this is a 45 year old engine technology, they don’t have good power but...

    7.3idi turbo vs 7.3idi

You also need the turbo engine balancer and flywheel/flexplate as they are weighted differently than the NA engine.

7.3 idi throttle position sensor question

The reason I say don’t use the battery is because we don’t know if the ground to the TCM is good, if it’s bad and the TCM is “floating” then any measurements will be off, measure right at the sensor using it’s dedicated ground back to the TCM will help rule out odd readings. Grey/red is the...

7.3 idi throttle position sensor question

Before you can fix anything you need to double check the vref voltage going to the sensor and make sure its right, if it’s truly 7.2v you need to figure out why (most likely bad TECA/TCM) it’s so high, you can throw as many TPS sensors at it, adjust it till you throw the thing across the yard...

7.3 idi throttle position sensor question

Are you 100% sure you got 7.2v WOT? The tps is only fed 5v from the TECA/TCM, if your getting 7.2v then the 5v vref is way out of spec and could be a bad TECA/TCM, also the BARO sensor is probably bad also as it runs off the same 5v vref as the tps sensor does

    Arduino Glow-plug Controller, Build & Walk-through

Just FYI, your going to smoke that INA226 on first power up, if you want to try a Hall effect sensor at least look at ACS772ECB-200, you’ll still be out of range on it but it won’t melt in front of your eyes.

    Arduino Glow-plug Controller, Build & Walk-through

I’m not sure exactly how you plan to use the ACS712 to measure glowplug current, it’s way too weak to even read one glowplug nevertheless 8, even using 8 ACS712 still won’t work. Look up VN7007AHTR It’s a high side driver that has a ton of protections, current sense, can be driven from the...

    Arduino Glow-plug Controller, Build & Walk-through

You have a great project idea but you need to back up a few steps and solve some major hurdles that you haven’t mentioned yet. What are you going to do to run the arduino in a vehicle? You can’t just hookup the Vin to the fuse box and expect it to live very long with load dumps from the...

Can our IDIs use a Powerstroke tach?

Going off memory here but any powerstroke clusters with a tach will say turbo diesel under the tach

Can’t win for nothing electrical edition

At least the fence wire has some rust protection! I’ve repaired a lot of boat trailer lights and 90%+ the ring terminal attached to the plastic light housing screw has rotted off and everything in the light is rotted away. Ford did do alright with the chassis harness grounding, they ran a...

Passenger side head not getting oil

If you have the heads off you can still use the starter and see what your oil pressure is, I know on my engine I can get 40-50psi of oil pressure just from the starter turning the engine over. Your engine having no heads would make it a lot easier for the starter to turn it and you can watch the...

    Glow plug amp draw

Cold glowplugs have a 0.25 ohm resistance, each plug draws over 50A-60A(battery voltage drop dependent) each, they drop quickly to about 30A in 3 or so seconds. So initial switch on your up around 400A draw, dropping to about half after several seconds. These plugs draw a lot more than people...
