I cant seem to be able to put my truck in 4L or N, I have no trouble with 4H though. And Im wondering if its ok to leave the front hubs locked? So i can use my 4x4 on demand instead of getting out of the truck everytime and locking them in. Does it do any harm leaving them locked?

Look at the 4wd shifter. need to push down to enguage N or 4LO. On the autocraptics u also need to be in neutral. Its ok to leave the hubs locked, some handling charatisitcs will be change but its ok. I try not to exceed 50 mph with the hubs locked in for extended periods of time.

I leave my hubs locked all winter unless its gunna be nice for a week during the winter.

What he said. If you look there is a write up on how to fix the 4wd shifter, they tend to seize up from lack of use then brake when tried

the best option is if you think youll need them lock them when cleaning the snow off the rig thats what i do lock um then drive and unlock once at the destination that way you dont forget about them and it does some damage to milage cause youre turning the whole front end not just wheels

On the 89 I pirated my drive train from, you had to push the shifter handle to the left to go past 4H. When I installed the linkage, I ground a chunk of steel off of the linkage so now it just goes straight back.

I assume you have looked under to see linkage by now. I bought a 1/2 ton once that wouldn't shift to 4L, turned out that the previous owner never used it and there was a big chunk of rock hard mud blocking the movement. I busted that out of the way and all was good.

Plus they are like gold to find used and hard as hell to locate. They sell new ones but they are expensive. DieselBrad did a how-to on fixing them and installing zerks to grease it.

My shifter was frozen too. I disassembled it Cleaned and lubed it adn its fine now. I drilled it and installed grease zerks while I had it apart.

I can't recommend doing that. Mine was froze up in the left position, so I just had to pull it back to shift it. But it started popping out of low range. After I fixed the shifter so the detent gates worked again, the popping out of low range went away.

That and it is very easy to accidentally shift into Neutral or 4low with out the detent there. It is there for a reason

Speaking of this, tomorrow i am going to take my 4wd shifter off, clean it up and install the zerks. Mine is smooth but might as well...
