I'm new to the internet and this forum, don't know if I'm in the right place to ask this:

I'm looking for an air compressor for a 7.3L IDI to run air brakes on trailers. I've been told that in some of the bigger trucks some of them have air compressors on an accessory plate that just bolts to the front of the 7.3 engine.

Does anyone know where I can get hold of one of these, please.

If you poke around a big truck wrecking yard you should be able to find a bus or dump truck etc that has that setup on it. Alternatively there are kits available for a york type compressor and mount that has weld up ears for universal mount if you search the web.
I don't know if it's legal but there are some constant duty electric compressors that they make for suspension systems now that might work nicely if you got a pair of them and rigged them to a few large storage tanks ( I've got one that feeds a storage tank off a semi trailer and a set of air suspension bags that are triggered by an automatic leveling control off a semi that uses a lot of air and it keeps up just fine)

What kind of trailers are you going to be hauling that you would need air brakes?

I'm using a York compressor on my F250. The bracket was fabbed up. Couldn't find one that would work for me, so one was made. I don't know if this would work on a serpentine belt set up or not. I will also add on my F350 in the next month or so. I used a dual belt power steering pump pulley found on non-A/C IDI's. The outer belt groove powers the compressor. I use a standard garage compressor switch to turn the clutch on and off automatically. I have a air tank under the bed with a quick connect and water drain as well. I keep air hose and the like in the truck as well.

Here are some photos that may help you:

I don't know if that helps or not.

<----- Has onboard air and 7.3. Find a Uhaul service ceter and ask about parts from non-running trucks.
Uhaul refers to these as "JH" series trucks. You'll have to convert from V-belts.

I was at the big truck boneyard in Dover AR today and he said he had a few brackets and compressors from these engines about $75 for just the bracket and $about 200for the bracket and compressor.
If you want their phone number I'll get it to you

Volvo.. 70's if i remember right..1 sec let me find it

edit.. found this info in the first link i posted :)

"Most people, however, use the York-style A/C compressors used by AMC, Ford, Volvo, Porsche, IH, and Oldsmobile in the '70's and early '80's"

most junk yard places that already have everything pulled for you such as the volvo specific yard we have here already know what a york pump is because SOOOOO many guys call and ask for them. My local volvo yard wants 50 i think for them and he has shelves of them because so many jeep guys call looking for them

What cars had the york on them? If I go to a junk yard where should I be looking?

Half the vehicles in existance..... pre 1980 ish. THey are getting a little hard to find these days

A lot of older Fords, Volvos, Semi trucks you name it used the things.
If you are going to use a york for an air compressor, make sure to read up thoroughly on converting teh things so you don't burn it up.

Prevost XLII mirage buses run them o n the secondary air conditioning system and they are the high output comptressor. We just replaced one because of a leak in the head. I snagged the old one and have a headgasket for the compressor sitting in my toolbox for when I get it ready to go in my 87.

How much Pressure will the york compressors create Constantly, i know they could build pressure repeatedly, but how much pressure could be constantly regulated to say a 1" hose?

Not really sure on that point but I did discover that napa now sells the two groove power steering pulleys. Will be picking one up and copying Hesuttons mounting bracket. Got really lucky today and found another 210 model with 12v clutch laying in a scrap pike because of another head leak.

The things will pump up over 350 psi with refrigerant on hot days. an air brake system would not require you to keep over 220 psi at a max, most running 150-190
