I'm in the middle of doing the zf 5 swap. I need to know what fluid the tranny uses. Also any one that has done this. How do I trick the system so it'll start without the auto tranny in it ? Do the auto ( e4od ) and the zf 5 use the same starter ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The ZF uses ATF. Some people like to overfill it (IIRC by one quart) to reduce the gear rollover noise.

Also, the starter is the same regardless of what tranny's in there.

Can't say about tricking the system, unfortunately...I swapped from a T-19 to the ZF, so I didn't have to worry about any of the electricals

So I can drain the tranny and just fill it back up with any atf? Anyone know where the speed odometer plugs in ? Rear end or tranny ?

on your '94 the speedo reading is off the rear end.
any ATF will work. some say the synthetic stuff will decrease gear rollover noise.

How much do they hold ?
they hold as much as the fill plug on the side of the trans will let drain out.
iirc a little more than a gallon.
As far as tricking the neutral safety switch, you can go low tech by removing the PRNDL switch on the side of the trans, stick a paper clip through the neutral index point and zip tie it to the harness on the frame.

Ford calls for SYNTHETIC ATF. 6.8 PINTS, but you can over fill to reduce the roll over noise.

If you have worn syncros Redline MTL can help some but dont expect miracles

I made a jumper wire for the neutral safety switch on the frame rail harness. Just took a short piece of wire with the proper plug fittings and it was done.

I used the Redline D4 ATF in my conversion and poured 5 quarts in right through the top where the stick shift attaches. Also used the D4 in the T-case.

I am going to run 2 gal of Syn 50wt ATF when I drain mine.

As for the nuetral safety switch I have no Idea, the only one I've done was mine to be able to start it without pushing the clutch (always had a ZF)
