So in the intrest of upgrading the offroadability of my tow rig (only 4X4 rig Ive got so it pulls double duty) and after getting stuck in a friends driveway yesterday (buried it up to the framerails in snow) was looking at possible tire/wheel upgrades and was wondering if you could go up to a 36X13.5 tire with no lift (other option I was looking at was 285/75/16 roughly)

No. It would rub at the suspension extremes. People that may write in and say they would fit don't haul firewood and put up with "slight" rubbing in tight turns. They would fit with a 4 inch lift.

i had a 1988 f250 heavy duty with 35 inch tires on it and it was fine BUT i had a custom made front bumper, without that you would have to trim the front bumper a little to clear them, the 13" wide tire is pretty wide, my 35s were 12.5 wide and they did rub but i also had the factory 8 inch wide wheels, if you have some wheels that are 10" wide and a good offset you wouldnt rub much at all if any

Was thinking 16.5X10 with a 3.5" backspacing (H1 takeoffs with custom centers) but sounds like the 36's are out, any ideas on a 285/75/16 fittment? (~33")

that should be no problem, i had a buddy with a 92 150 with 33s on it and had no issues, not sure how high your truck sits though

I easily fit 315x75x16s on my F350 but i see urs is a 250 so i would say not without some kind of lift. I did add a sprng to the front to level it out but that was more for cosmetic then function. Also taking into account of F250s springs sagging a 4" would be best IMHO.

For all practical purposes by the time I get around to the tires itll be a F350, should be doing a D60 swap over the summer and a PO put some monster sized leafs and overloads on the rear (my 8k lb trailer + flatbed hardly puts it on the overloads) due to the tow rig duty and some of the passangers I take with on occasion a lift is out of the question, heck the lift a D60 and 36's wouldve given was almost to much.

i had 33x12.5x16.5 on my truck with stock suspension and had to trim the front bumper and had a little rub on tight turns but it's a 16.5x12.5 rim not sure of back spacing

285's will fit with no problems, a very nice tire to upgrade to. 305/70-16's will rub the leaf spring and limit your turning radius.

I'm running 33x12.50r16.5's on my rig and have no problems. Not sure on the backspacing but the outer edge of the tire is about 1" outboard of the fenders. I would think a 35 would fit with a small (1-2") lift or body lift, though you might have rubbing issues on tight turns. All depends on the backspacing.

Got a friend with 36" TSL radials and I haven't seen or heard them rub yet, but I don't think he carries any real weight. Bronco Graveyard catalogue says 36" tire will fit on stock f-350 4x4.
