the average "decent - very good" condition all running idi truck sells now for about $2,500-$3,500.
the average E40D will run ya about that much and in many cases more.so it's little wonder why most simply switch to the much more affordable zf5.
the masses simply wont (and in most cases can't) pay the cost or more of the vehicles value in a singular repair.most will simply write it off and buy something newer......and in most cases, rightfully so.
ever get a chance to run a 6. oh no - 6.4l psd auto truck.......put that sucker in tow mode and it will make any manual shift lover change his tune......they're nice guys.very nice.

I have to agree 110% with that. As a long time 6.0L 5R110 TorqShift Automatic owner. I have no want of a standard in that truck. Tow/Haul mode rocks when you are towing, have a heavy truck, or in the case of what we do, we have relatives that live in the foothills of Southeast Kentucky, and Tow/Haul mode rocks in the hills and mountains with just the truck, it is really nice to have the engine braking. When we go down Big Hill (yes that's its name) I always joke that is free. Going down the hill, the RPM's are up enough the computer stops fueling the truck and just "coasts" down the hill. When I had the RV, I would put it in Tow/Haul mode, set the cruise at the posted speed limit and just drive. I had plenty of power, didn't have to worry about the truck or transmission overheating, it just took care of itself. They have come a LONG way in auto transmissions from the stock E4OD.

Since this has turned into a "why you like what you like" thread, I'll give my thoughts. I have driven newer trucks with autos and manuals. Around town, the autos are fine I guess, but if I were to own a newer truck it would have a 6 speed manual. I typically hate whatever gear an auto chooses when towing in hilly or mountainous terrain. I like to have complete control of what gear I'm in. I also like the reliability of a manual. I don't like the idea of a breakdown due to the trans, no matter if it's in town or in the middle of nowhere. If treated correctly, a manual shouldn't leave you in a bind. I suppose it breaks down to piece of mind to me. I like simple, mechanical devices.
