I've got a father-in-law with a '96 dually 5 speed 4X4. He's got well over 200K on everything and the transmission is starting to give him problems. He is to the point where he's got enough miles on it that he wants to just pull it and have it rebuilt. My question...can he convert to a 6 speed with out much problem? I know he'd have to change driveshaft length, but does everything bolt up and do the shifters line up?

I'd sure appreciate any help. Thanks,

Paul

I suppose it would fit-up well, only the NV5600 (6speed) is a bit longer than the NV4500 (5-speed). And only the 2001 and up model has the 1-3/8" input shaft. But New Venture has stopped building the NV5600, since they lost their contract.

6 speed?

 Check the price on the six speed. You may change your mind. Ebay you can get them for about $2000, but most places want a core, add another $1000.;Really

Installing a NV5600 6 speed in place of a NV4500HD in 1994 and newer trucks is a straight forward job. The conversion usually requires buying a new clutch with a 1.375" hub to match the input shaft of current production NV5600s, but it is possible (although not recommended) to get an early production transmission with a 1.250" input shaft.
