i didn't know this was common.i r3ecently had the grinding starting issue and i thought it was just the starter.i got a replacement and it's done it once so far (out of about 50 starts so far probably)
when it did that,i felt my heart sink as i figured i had to pull the trans and replace the flywheel.since it's apparently not going to hurt anything,im not gunna mess with it.

or will it eventually start doing it all the time,and i'll have too?

Now that I think about it I'm pretty sure I had looking into the double relay setup some years ago.... can't recall why though, or why I never did it. :dunno

I think the best would be to use another solenoid - not too large and you already know it can handle the current. You would need to provide a retainer for the plunger though, although I think removing the main spring from behind the plunger would help a lot and still work.
