My beloved 86 had the dreaded water separator air intrusion. I didn't want to by pass it and risk water in my fuel but, I didn't want to ditch my filter by the injection pump. My fix is easy and was free for me. I used an 1982 6.2's water separator. It bolts up using the original separators holes.
Step one- drain fuel out of your separator.
Undo fuel lines
Unbolt original separator.
Remove it( I was able to slide it between cruise control servo and the vacuum canister)
This is the hardest part. You need 2-90° fittings that fit in the 6.2 filter head so the fuel lines don't get kinked. I used T fittings so I could put a pressure gauge be for and after. (I'm running a cater lift pump so its an easy please to put my gauge)
Now install the filter head and connect the fuel lines as they are marked on filter head.
Install filter and prime the filter.
The only thing I don't like is I lost my water in fuel lite. I drain the new filter once a month.
