Off topic rant. I"M SICK OF PEOPLE USING WEBSHOTS. Every time I go to someones pictures hosted there I get a virus. I am no longer going to look at anything hosted on webshots.
I'm sure the brake job looks great.

Did you have any issues w the truck not stopping as well as the drums. Over on the powerstroke nation there a bunch of guys that went to discs, to only go back to the drums because the discs would not stop the truck.

I know my 86, 96, + 97 would out stop my 2000 that had 4 wheel discs

I like the idea of discs for the self cleaning properties (cant get mud or snow packed in like with drums). This idea is great for off road rigs, but not so much for towing rigs. Diesels are built to move some weight. Most of our trucks are used for towing. Heavy trucks that are purpose built to move REALLY serious weight, all have drums due to the drums effectiveness.

I like the idea of discs, but wont be converting any towing vehicles over to them.

I never want rear discs again in the snow-country of the Northeast- have had two different vehicles- one domestic, one foreign, totally self-ruin their rear brakes in under two years, from new, with only me driving, and using a gearshift to decelerate, because of the way that winter salt get in the rear calipers and make them stick. Wrecked not only pads but rotors, and in one case, one of the calipers. Front discs don't seem to get the road slime up into them- have never had the same problem, nor have I ever had any trouble with rear drums.

I hate drums. They never seem to hold their adjustment for very long.

Webshots is also pretty terrible.

Poor Barney I suppose he wasn't expecting this kind of a rant, against webshots and then rear discs! I'm not going to go look though...Sean's pretty smart maybe they do have a security problem there. I haven't had a problem there yet but I don't like decontaminating my computer. It's hard work. See I had always thought discs were superior in every way. I know the best argument for them though is ease of service. That turns out not to be true though if they get all eaten up with road salt. It would probably still be an OK idea for someone like me who rarely puts any serious weight on the truck and drives it daily yet still maintains the brakes often. Also, no road salt and very little ice/snow in FL.

Im not saying discs are bad at all. The ease of maintenance and their "quit drain/dry" ability is priceless, in the right application.

Im building one rig for dd and off road, It would be a great candidate for rear discs, and will get them if I can ever find a way to afford it. The other rig (and the one I hope to have soon as its counterpart) will be doing the heavy hauling and therefore will have drum rears.

Its great that we finally have some photos and step by step. Everyone of us has our own uses for our trucks, and a lot of those dont require drums, so discs would be easier, simpler, and less hassle.

Thanks for the post barney. Sorry if I came across wrong.

I don't think you were disrespectful at all Justin, I just hated to see him have a negative response to his hard work. However the issues you and the others brought up are important. Safety has to be most important especially when you are dragging the family around or hauling a big load. I'd also like to be warned before I spent a crapload of money on something like this. Maybe the hydrostop wit drums is what is needed in a serious tow vehicle and in a light duty/DD or mud truck the discs are what is needed?

Which rotors did you end up using? Do you have a parking brake? I wonder if this formula would play out for a 10.25 nicely.

There's a place on the intertubes that sells cheap Chevy caliper brackets that'll fit the big axle tube size on the 10.25. I think the problem in my mind was always the parking brake.

Ok I finally got my computer all straightened out. I thought I was going to have to wipe it clean but did finally figure out how to lock down the host program and all 32 trojan viruses and then clean them off my system. Ugh.
I wish I could look at the pictures better because I'd like to do that to my truck at some point. I do understand the benefits of a drum system but the disk system is so much more serviceable. Not to mention when used with the proper proportioning valve and a hydroboost system the braking capacity is improved significantly.

I used 85 Chevy rotors and calipers. I could have used eldorado calipers as they have a e brake capability but I have never used an emergency brake and I'm cheap. I know, spare me the lecture I've heard it all before.

It should but you'd have to find the right bracket for that rearend. I have a 60 out of a 75 F250 under my truck.
