After reving to the governer sometimes it will shutdown the motor for a few min. it doesnt happen very often, at first we thought it was an electrical problem so we hard wired the fuel selonoid and it still does it sometimes, is this a commen problem? this is in the sweeper in my sig. rotery pump non- intercooled identical to the first gen cummins in the dodges. thanks- Russ

Never heard of such a problem before. It sounds like you're revving to the governor limiter and when you come completely off the trottle (directly back to idle) it dies. To me that screams fuel supply problem. Maybe when you pull off quickly you're starving the engine of fuel long enoguh to shut it down.

It seems to be rpm related but not throttle related, it has done it more on the decel like when decending a steep grade and the truck out reves the governor, then when it gets back into normal rpm it wont give it any fuel. It has done it a few times on a hard uphill climb at high rpm, when that happens the rpms are 25-2600 and it seems instead of starting to moderate the fuel the governor just shuts down the fuel alltogether and the motor stops. I think the governor is sticking or might have a spring problem, if thats what it is can it be fixed? or is it pump time? Other than this this motor runs great, starts easy, good power, good economy, the truck weighs 21k and has no problems holding 60 on freeway grades. thanks for the help- Russ

The pump can be rebuilt and there are rebuild kits out there that will replace all the seals and such. You can also try to replace just eh governor spring if you think that may be the problem. They're cheap but take time to replace.

Or you can get a rebuilt pump for relatively little as well. Piers is up near you and they can rebuild them or do whatever: http://www.pdrdiesel.com/catalog/Injection_Pumps-124-1.html
