lets assume Im new here, that Im familiar with thermocouples, but not diesels and that Im a little unsure what and where we are measuring.

yeah I think rldsl posted a link for that last week. I bought a water temp gauge from him and got it yesterday and looks great, just have to install it inplace of my old sunpro. I would have got that pyro too but it wont fit in my pillar being 3".

measures the heat in the cyl by the exhaust temp comming out of manifold so you dont melt your pistons by to much fuel/heat.

implying turbo boost? not as critical for say my naturally aspirated engine?

No, if the amount of fuel to air ratio is too high it causes the EGT (exhaust gas temps) to get too hot and you risk melting pistons. 1250F is the highest you want to see. A pyro is good to have so you can adjust your IP (injection pump) for the best power and fuel settings. This is just as important on a NA.
