thinking of what rear i should put under my 466 powered travelette. it's between the 10.25 (have one with 3.55's, just need to have a true trac installed) or a 14 bolt (needs to be regeared and tt installed.....). my goal is 500 HP which should put me in the mid 900's for torque. cookoo thanks!

i would use the 14 bolt. stronger center chunk, three bearings on pinion, and one helluva aftermarket. did i just say that?

i was thinking the same thing with the extra bearings and all... just thought that the 10.25 may be a cheaper way out....

how about a dana80? they're nearly indestructible in my towtrucks.

That's what I plan on using behind my DT466. I've had that 10 lug (10k lb) Dana 80 in the shop for a bit and it dwarfs the 10.25. A metric ton of aftermarket beef for the Dana 80. I'll probably get my axles and other 80 parts from SCS when the time comes.

10.25 is stout

i ran one for 10 years in my 515 hp 610 ft lb propane powered 472 big block with doublers built automatic lockers double beadlocks and 44 swampers. never had a single problem out of it with the 4.10 gears or after i put 5.13's and detroit in it

1.5" 35 spline axles will take some serious abuse, just put dana 70 style ring gear bolts with shoulders in to eliminate the factory bolt backing out problem, weld the centersection to the axle tubes and install a crush sleeve eliminator kit....you wont break it.

10.25 in my 87 with welded spiders and aired down 37's has taken some serious abuse behind my 6.9 too

the oring seals on the axle shafts are a huge plus, the brakes drums being outside of the hubs is nice and when setting up the gears the carrier bearing shims are outside so you dont have to constantly press the bearings on and off to change shims like a dana axle

hmmm... well is there a dana 80 that's 8 lug?
Dodge used an axle in the '90's...IIRC it was a hybrid Dana 70/80, but I don't recall the details. In any event, it's an 8-lug axle and you won't have the issues with finding tall gears that you will with a "real" Dana 80. I don't know how stout they are, however...

only thing is i'm going to be sinking $1000 or so in lockers, bearings and brakes i'd rather it last then just a "see if it makes it down the driveway" kinda deal! lol

It is much easier to do a brake job on a Sterling then a 14 bolt.

But I would switch to any rear axle if I could get disc brakes.
