More then likely that it starts then dies is, crank crank fills the filter full of fuel, then starts till the filter runs out of fuel and dies. If it has only a 1/4 tank or less and the pickup foot (Shower Head) Pic below has fallen off or disintegrated, it will be sucking air, at idle RPM, it's not running fast enough to refill the filter because it's sucking air and fuel, but also could be just the suction lines.
Replace the glow plugs with ZD9 (Pin Ends) or if it has the ZD1 with spade ends with Motorcraft/Beru, next choice is Wellman GP's.
If you have GP's that don't want to come out, ask on here on how to get them out.
