I thinking of installing a gear venders overdrive for fuel mpg increase. Does anyone out there have a 4:10 geared zf-5 with a gear vendors? What fuel mileage are you getting running 70-75 on highway?

I do not have 4:10 gears or a ZF I have an E4OD and in double overdrive my final ratio is 1.96 per gear vendors books and charts. Doing 75 to 85 mph driving home from the 2009 rally I averaged 18.9 mpg. This is my rpm doing these speeds.

I really want one of those, like the OP I have the 4:10 with ZF-5, but the price is a bit prohibitive.

I would look carefully at the numbers - you'll need to drive many thousands of miles for the fuel savings to come remotely close to the cost of the GV. I'd expect to see a difference of 1-2 mpg max, probably less if you're doing anything other than high speed empty freeway driving. You can get pretty close to the same result putting a 3.55 rear in or going to bigger tires for a heck of a lot less money.

i wouldn't run double overdrive without an f-super duty and their 4.63 or 5.13 gearing.
with 4.10's you'd have to be like Gary and out on the interstate and or speeding lol.:D

May not be worth it for mpg, at least I cannot verify as I just ended up driving faster with the gv unit. It does reduce the noise level though, and contrary to what non owners say splitting 3rd with the close ratio zf does comes in handy when pulling. My gv is sending power to 3.55 though.

My gears are 3:55. I can't split 1st from the start but.. Once moving about 23 mph I can split 1st gear. I have 8 forward gears now so finding the appropriate gear is mush simpler.

what is the legal speed limit in your state? in kali, it 65 in urban and 70-75 in rural. with my ZF5 and 4.10LS rear, 65 = 1800 rpm on the tach. any hint of a upward rise in the road, the speed will fall off immediately. where it is stable, is 2200 rpm but that meant I was running at 85 mph. in kali anything above 80 mph is a 2 point felony on your DL. when the GV was broken in half on a off road trip, I swaped it out and didn't bother looking for a replacement. need photo proof I ran a GV with a ZF5? see below.

Because a lot of them are worn the hell out! I have to explain this to my yanqui friends, stuff doesn't rust in a lot of the country, but replacing every little thing due to wear gets tiring after a while.

I have been considering the same deal. I would hope for an extra mpg, but mostly just to quiet things down.

So towcat if I read your post correctly you didn't replace the gv unit. So what was the mpg change? At 75 I'm like 2400 and 13.5 mpg. If I run two lane roads thru hills not over 55-60 mph I get almost 17. All of this not towing or hauling. When the GV broke how heavily loaded were you? I'm thinking it has something to do with the double overdrive and added stress created. I had a GV from 1988 to 2000 on a 1987 6.9 c-6 f250 3.55 gear with 300,000 miles on it with no problems. With many trips to South Dakota were I split gears constantly and kicked od in and out on the hills in pa ohio Iowa and sd.
