I would leave the oring the way it is.
So you changed the gear oil, or just drained some out?

I changed the rear differential fluid with some valvoline 85w-140 limited slip oil, and it was much easier filling the rear differential through the vss port. I filled the rear differential a little too full on accident but after a short drive around the block, I let the excess drain.
