Well ......

I have a fun job ahead of me ...

A straight complete rear differential and leaf spring swap
between a 1990 CC F350 dually and a 1994 CC F350 dually

Both are IDI trucks

The 1990 has a completely rebuilt rear end
(wheel bearings - seals - rear differential - brakes)

I am trying to line up enclosed space since it is 22 degrees
here - think I found a place

My plan is to park the 1990 F350 I am taking the donor
from - pull it complete without removing the bed

Then back the 1994 F350 up to it - pull that one
again without pulling the bed

Install the 1990 rear end into the 1994 and drive away

Then install the 1994 rear end into the 1990 and drive away

I figure 3 full days doing it myself ..... :D

Any suggestions from folks who have done this ?

I would think you co do them both in a day easily. Soak everything with penetrating oil early on and it will make it go much smoother.

Unless you have issues with rusty bolts it should be an afternoon project.

Advice would be to use some pentrating oil or a wire brush on a drill to brush the rust off. I prefer to wire brush old bolts a couple days before.

I just hate dealing with the brake lines...

Ah come on, aren't old rusty brake lines fun, especially when the fitting is seized on the line? :backoff:backoff

OP: just remember, if all else fails, use a bigger hammer :rotflmao

If these are both 10.25s, if it matters but the 94 rear would have a slighlt different yoke, since ford changed from a "short plained shaft" yoke on the earlier to a longer shaft yoke on the 93+s. unless ya just swap the driveshaft at the same time i would make sure it would fit.

Like i said, shouldnt be an issue but throwin it out there.

I put my 94 yoke on the 90 rear i'm running.

BTW its a afternoon project if everything unbolts. I did my swap by myself in about 4 hours start to finish. And i'm a small guy. I just left tires attached and rolled it around like that and just unbolted the front eyelet bolt and the rear shackle.

what to you plan to do for speedometer, if im not mistaken, the 94 has the sensor in the rear and the 90 has the gear in tranny still, could be mistaken

Good point ...

The 94' is not a Powerstroke ..
It is a factory IDI turbo, I don't know if it was built before 04/94

Is there a difference - anyone know ?

both have a abs sensor in the rear diff. The 92+ will use the signal from this sensor to drive the speedo. Ask me... Ive done it. Works great.

i had major issues getting the rear shackle bolts out. Not enough upper body strength as i was doing it on the ground. It sucked. but it took me about 4 hours.

Ha that comment reminded me of the All in the Family episode were the meathead was puttin on his shoes one foot at a time, and Archie went off about doin it the polish way. I can see it now, removing the tires, getting the axle out n then putting the tires back on once the axle is on the ground.

No offense, just a little humor.

Not an easy job .....

Not an easy driveway job ......

I put the trucks back to back - jacked up both frames so
wheels were off the ground - disconnected the rear dif
on the 94' first - removed the front leaf spring bolts -
cut off the rear leaf spring hanger rivets ......

Did the same on the 90' ....

I used grade 7/16" x 1.5" grade 8 bolts to refasten
the leaf spring hangers ....

Although the dif sensor connection is the same,
you have to change the sensor from a 90'
to the 94' because of the digital speedo ....

The speedo will not work & your tranny will not
shift correctly without swapping the dif sensors ....
