gears have nothing to do with gvw.the sizes of the housing, axles, axle tubes, hubs and bearings do.if that was the case then the 2000 gmc 6500 im driving only has the gvw of a half ton cuz its got 3.08s in it

Gears have alot to do with it. that is why a f350 w 3:55 has a lower GVW than one w 4:10s

that is also why superdutys were never offered w anything higher than 4:88

once again if thats the case why would a peterbilt with an 80,000 gvw have 3.73??the old 78 6500 we had had a 2 speed rear with 6.30s.that would mean i could carry more on that 6500 than a pete.

my old 87 f350 2 car carrier had 3.73s and an 11,000 gvw.my 88 f350 dually i had had 4.10s with a 10,000 gvw,my 95 dually has 4.10s and 10,000 gvw.

A peterbuilt is a completly different animal. Not even comparable
F450 and f550 you cant get 4:10s from the factory for a reason

Dont ask me. ask ford. my 88 F350 dually had a GVW of 10,000 w 4:10s

gears have alot to do w GVW

gears only decide whether or not your engine/tranny combo can pull the wieght with the best fuel mileage and less wear on the drivetrain.

they are 8 lug not 10 lug and the E series runs a dana 70HD

I was only thinking for a donor gearset for the 88-97 F-superduty.

I have a Dana 80 for a 96-97ish vintage E-Superduty (aka E450) and it is 4.10 and 8-lug disc-brake without a parking brake. ;)

the E-series Dana80 definitely did exist in the F550 chassis. I do have pics I can post later.

4:63 there bud, got an axle out of one in my yard... Just need to find someone that wants to buy it. plus the GVWR wasn't that high, it was only 14,500. 11000 rear and 5000 front.

The reasoning is it makes things easier on the engine and transmission. It;s liek trying to take 21 speed bicycle uphill in high gear...hard to do. Shift to low gear and all of a sudden it's easier.

The truck will essentially pull the same weight, but the 4.10 trucks will do it easier and without hurting themselves....thus the higher weight rating.

From Dana's catalogs, the Van 80 didn't get 4.10's until 99, and even for the 4.63's, the carrier and gearset are different than the older 80's, which leads me to believe there is a case dimension change. It looks like only the spider and side gears interchange, nothing else. The Dodge stuff also calls for entirely different part numbers, which match the 99+ van stuff..
Looking at Gm stuff, their 10 lug motorhome stuff uses the same part numbers as the Ford 10 lug axles. Odds are the Dodge hybrid version uses a different pinion offset like a 60 vs 61.

Dana's ring & pinion numbers reflect a kit - which includes bearings, shims, slinger, seal, pinion nut, etc. There are at least 2 different pinion bearing sizes for the D80. The carrier difference could be a switch from a 2-spider to a 4-spider. I've seen both in the Dana 80.

I'm inclined to believe the Randy's Ring and Pinion guy on the link I posted.

Another example is front D60 spindles for a 92-97 F350. Dana lists different part numbers for the 78-91 and 92-97. The difference is the latter is a kit with seals. The spindles are the same.
