Looking at a 95 F450 with 5.13's in it now and the customer wants it regeared to 4.10's.

Going that large of a jump will the carrier need to be swapped too?
Anything else I may be missing?

He's looking to get some highway use out of the truck and the 7.3 is screaming once he hits 60.

I hauled 16k-21k gross routinely for ten years and only did three clutch jobs.:D
that's the beauty of gearing with the F450's

4.63 is the lowest you can go without a carrier and housing change.

according to a guy out here who is a 450 nut there is a place online where you can buy any gear you want for the 450 and only need to swap the carrier.unfortunately i dont talk to him anymore and dont know the web address

try seeing if the dodge parts may fit.im running a power locker from a gm in my dana70hd.had to mod it for the tone ring for the speedo and abs to work

accordingly to Randy's Ring and Pinion technical dept, the only thing that will interchange with the Ford Dana 80's of '88-'97 vintage to the later stuff is the cover. nothing else will interchange.-cuss-cuss-cussThat's why the mods to our Dana 80's are so frightfully expensive.

And that right there is gonna scare my customer away from the swap me thinks.
He's gonna have more in the gear swap than what he paid for this truck.
But at least I get another chance to paint another truck..........NOT BLUE!!!!:sly

Ron, you can get gears from 3.31 up to 5.38's. The cut off ratio IIRC is 4.10. Numerically lower than that (i.e. 3.73 and the like) you need a different carrier.

Here is Randy's Ring and Pinion Dana 80 gear list.

what you see on the webpage is not correct for the older stuff. anytime you deal with the housing and carrier area, you must have the "build number" or you will be severely disappointed. The build number is stamped on the passenger side of the axle tube somewhere from the 12 to 3 o'clock position near the carrier housing. there's something about the older D80's that make them different from the late stuff.

be better off finding the 4.63s for it.although ive torn apart many 450s and never found that ratio in any of them.my 2 car carrier with factory turbo 7.3 was a dog with 5.13s took all day to get it up to highway speed.had no problem running around grossing over 20,000lbs.

The E-superduty and Dodge used 4.10 in a Dana 80 in the 90's... so there a source for parts if all else fails.

The 5:13 or 4:88 is what gives the F-sureduty it high GVW. With 4:10 you will "only" have a F350's capacity

gears have nothing to do with gvw.the sizes of the housing, axles, axle tubes, hubs and bearings do.if that was the case then the 2000 gmc 6500 im driving only has the gvw of a half ton cuz its got 3.08s in it
