If you rev it up and the smoke goes away, then the engine is inhaling it and burning it off like it's supposed to and you don't have so much that it's not overwhelming the system, so you're good to go, but either a good cleaning or preferably just replace the thing as old as it is. Remember, it is a safety device aside from just emission control, it will prevent a runaway in the event of too much oil residue in the blowby, but it won't work if there's a hole in the diaphram.
Don't worry about asking questions , that's what were here for. I never met anyone yet who was born knowing how to do anything other than cry and wet themself . Everyone had to learn everything else somewhere.
