AFTERMARKET TACH

My truck does not have a factory tach. I would like to add an aftermarket unit. Does anybody have any suggestions? I'm also not real sure where the pickup for the tach would be located. Does it read off of the crank or what???

I bought the autometer ultralite and the pick-up attaches to the alternator with a hose clamp they include with the tach. The only problem was calibrating it between the real RPM and what the alternator is spinning. I believe the other method is attaching a magnet to the harmonic balancer and bolting the pick-up to the front cover.

I made an optical tach out of a paper out sensor from an dot matrix printer. Modified a gas tach to accept the TTL level input from the sensor. It's worked great for over 20 years.

I have an old dixson came out of a 83 idi even says diesel on it, picked up off the alternator.
