Just about got the 1994 7.3L IDI turbo engine swapped in for the 1987 6.9L IDI.

How can I convert the old alternator harness on the 1987 truck so that the new 7.3L alternator will work? The old harness has one power wire and two smaller wires. The new alternator has three prongs and then 1 prong.

Also wondering if the new steering pump will fit the old hose fittings. The new pump was missing the fitting the pressure hose screws into the pump. I have one on order hopefully its the right part.

Hello Jason... I did this alternater change a few years back. I got the alternater harness from a wrecker in the yards and just wired it in to the harness in the truck. Your going to do away with the external voltage regulater. I can't recall what wires you use and leave off the new setup. I think typ4 knows which wires to use. Maybe others on this forum will chime in with some help. I'm really not very good with wireing so I can't answer all the questions. I do recall it was really simple. Otherwise I couldn't have done it without lots of help.

Do you have the wiring harness for the new alternator? If not, there are plenty in the junkyard. Just run by all the late model taurus until you see one with an alternator on top. That should be a 3G.

Here is my understanding of the 3G alternator wiring. There is way too much info available for a 3G alternator conversion. Here is a good link with a nice drawing

The big lug goes to your battery through a fused wire. A large fused wire.
The S pin in the three prongs just loops back to the S single pin. This will be done for you in a factory harness.
The I pin takes ignition which is in your current wiring.
The A pin connects to the positive battery.

Did I mention a fuse? Like a 175 amp one?

Does your pump have the check valve and spring still that were under that fitting?

Hey Gary and dgr.

Thanks for your help! Doesn't look to hard to wire in that alternator like I had thought it might.

No I don't think it has the check valve and spring. I found a spare pump that was in my pile of parts with the fitting in tact. I'll get the check valve and spring from that one.

Thanks again.
