Oil pan needs replaced

Well my oil pan is leaking pretty bad. Tracked the leak down to a shoddy jb weld job by previous owner. What do you guys suggest for a replacement pan? One from the ford dealer or from oreillys or something along those lines? Unfortunately im getting ready to bend over because im having a shop do it :(

Where are you located? Oem ford new or used is the only way to go as far as concerned. I've done about 20 oil pans on ford diesels over the years.

^^^That will probably be the cheapest option. Try and find an engine that is already out of the vehicle if you could. Makes oil pan removal alot easier IMO.

Oem is the only sure way to go on this. Some of the chinese crap is so thin you can read a book thru it.. Whatever you do make sure nobody installs an oil pan gasket. Use rtv only just like the factory did. Several members have tried the gaskets and they leaked in no time. Then the engine comes out another time to replace it. If the shop thinks they can simply lift the engine in the truck enough to replace the pan they are mistaken. The oil pump must be dropped and hands wont make that tight turn to do this job.. But if they do that good luck I say... Glad its not me doing the work... Get a quote and hold them to it because this job required engine removel..

I actually did r&r my pan with engine in truck. Haynes manual said it could be done, so thats what I did. I wouldn't do it again but it did happen. Oil pump has to be dropped into pan before pan comes out. I lost several wrenches in pan before tying a string to one.

I had good luck with ones I've gotten off of ebay. Of course, you'll never know what the quality is until you get it.

I have a brand new oil pan. Not sure who its made by. Came with a parts truck. I'll take a look and throw a caliper on it to get thickness

Well I found a shop to do it and sure enough the engine does have to come out. So with that said would it be wise for me to have them throw in a new oil pump? My truck has 178,*** on it.

I was thinking the same for mine, new oil pump, until I saw a post by typ4. He said he lost oil pressure with an aftermarket Melling compared to the OEM. This would be a good time to reseal the oil cooler. Typ4 has the International orings.

Yep reuse the old oil pump. Too bad you weren't closer, I'd prolly be able to save you a few bucks.

Ill be getting all my parts from the dealer so hopefully it'll be ok. I just can't see having all that done just for the oil pump to fail down the road.

Seems the salt belt areas have an oil pan rot issue. So why is there not some tar like coating that you guys can apply to ward off the rust. Maybe something like rino liner. Seems painting it each oil change with anything to stop the rust is going to save the pans... I'm just not understanding why this happens.

Yeah Gary we get hit hard with the road seasonings and its brutal. I've gotten in the habit of putting a fresh coat of cheap gloss black paint on everything underneath on the dually to keep the rust at bay. It's not as bad since she turns into lawn ornament in October, but not so with the plow truck.
