well i went to the heavy truck area of my local pick and pull and found 35 trucks with 6.9 and 7.3 idi engines, it was awesome, lots of c6 transmission but no zf in them but 20 of them were the old s1600 international box trucks that u haul used to use and all of them had manual trannies in them, starting to consider using a divorced transfer case for 4x4 and sticking one of those transmissions in my truck, can get if for 250 bucks

Nice find. Most of those 5 speeds had a 1 to 1 5th gear. Would need 3.55s at the least.

i was wondering that, i have 3.55 with 35 inch tires, would that be better than my c6 3 speed for high way driving? i know final drive is the same but i just cant see a 5 speed getting worse fuel economy than a 3 speed

still direct drive.1:1 but with the old c6,they don't lock like a modern auto or manual.just swapping out the c6 to any manual trans will boost economy.
just grab a manual 4 speed in one of the idi trucks for an easy convert and same final ratio anyway.they should be priced reasonable too.

what JY was this?

where abouts is Rockwood MI?

its in down river, the yard is called parts galore its on telegraph road in flat rock, there are three locations but the flat rock location is the only one with heavy truck, they have fantastic prices, no zf's there but there standard price on all manual transmission (non- heavy truck) is 70 bucks, very good prices,

there was a 4 speed also sitting out already pulled out i was looking at to, i just couldnt beleave there was so many idi's, before they were hard to find in any yard around my place and they had so many of them, it was great, most were complete engines, they even had some good old ford dump trucks with 460's and 390's in them, sterling axles, semi intercoolers for 35 bucks, one of the dump trucks had a gear vendor on it i was looking at to, wish i had more money

yes its south eastern Mi, anyone interested in going just so you know for the regular yard its 1 dollar to get in, they have engine hoists you can use and can rent wheel borrows, heavy truck is 3 dollars to get in, but if you get in the heavy truck it gives you access to both heavy truck and regular yard, here is a link to a website forum were someone posted the price list for the regular yard http://teamzx2.com/threads/34679-MICHIGAN-Parts-Galore-PRICE-LIST-(2012)-3-Detroit-area-locations

Then you will dread it. I'm kinda halfway on the lookout for a DRW open 3.55 to swap out the 4.10LS I've got now. Turning 2000rpm@47mph sucks fuel like there is no tomorrow. I don't do much loaded anymore..

I've managed to find two individual trucks, both 7.3idis, in the seven yards within 75 miles of home. Two freaking trucks. The rest I see are still on the road. :(

that was the same problem for me, never could find them, i never thought about heavy truck, i was in there looking for an intercooler and then i seen a hole bunch of uhaul trucks with them and behind those were old ford flat beds with 6.9s and 7.3s, none were turbo though but some parts were still in great shape

Wow... You found the horn of plenty for idi trucks in wrecking yards. Hope you guys get what you want from them but remember the injection pumps wil have a lower top rpm than whats found in any pickup truck.. Still, they are at least good for a core. Mel might even be interested in a few of them if the price is right...
