I finally started cleaning up the 4bt.
Got the kdp tabbed, and the engine all resealed.
This is a running engine, so I didn't bother replacing the head gasket even though I have one on the shelf. I figured I'd run it as is and see whats what? Do you guys have any thoughts on this? Think I should remove a bearing cap and take a look? or just run this thing and see what happens?

Here she is, one before shot and several after with a fresh coat of cummins tan. ( the pics make it look lighter than it is)

The next step will be to bolt up the zf and do some test fitting so I can figure out my motor mounts and decide if I need to modify the oil pan.

Looks good! I would put it in and button everything up. I would assess how well the engine runs under load before decided to change things. I would only check a main bearing if the oil pan has to come off for modifications.

Got the small block ford bell housing adapter installed, as well as the flywheel and a new clutch. After installing a new slave cylinder I got the ZF5 bolted up. Leaving the oil pan and starter off for now because I'm anticipating clearance issues...

Now all I gotta do is stuff all this giant hunk of iron into a Ranger... hmmmm

That would be an interesting set-up in a half ton driver truck. I like the rangers too. Cool build. ;Sweet

life got in the way a little bit for a while, but im back to making progress.

The drive train is in, and i'm liking how everything fits. I want to move it all back maybe 1/2" just to give the oil pan a touch more clearance. Hoping to fire it soon...

This is a very cool swap and I appreciate the pics. Are you doing anything to beef up the front suspension/axle? Since the Ranger is an '88, I think it would still have the Dana 28 up front and the Ford 7.5 out back (think Ford went to the D35/8.8 in 1991). I know you have plenty to work on already, but it would be a perfect time for a SAS and install a narrowed D44. I love spending other peoples' time and money!:sly

Thanks tbrumm
Right you are right you are... It has the silly 28 up front, and the weak 7.5 out back. For this phase, its getting an 8.8 in the rear, and a 35TTB up front. A 44 SAS may be on the horizon in phase 2 if i have a lot of trouble with the 35.

Good idea - the D35 and 8.8 should swap right in without too much trouble. I figured you would probably be ditching the 28 with the extra weight going in up front. The D35 will probably hold up fine. It was a good axle in a lighter truck like a Ranger. The only bad part with a 35 (other than being a TTB in the first place) is that the inner and outer wheel bearings are so darn close together.

lots of progress, even tho it doesnt really look like it.

I replaced the remote style reservoir on the power steering pump with the ham can style. I used one from a 75 lincoln because they were setup for hydro boost. Also I replaced the exhaust manifold for one that puts the turbo up high and not tilted. Got the alternator put in and the serp belt on.

Once I bled the air out if the system, I was able to fire the motor. Only for a few seconds though because as you can see, there is no cooling system yet.

oil pressure looks great, and seems to run good. Still might have air in the system but I'll worry about that once I get the front clip on.

tore the Dana 35 down and started cleaning it up.

I'm going to replace all the axle shaft ujoints and the wheel bearings, and the pivot bushings. Everything with the pumpkin seems tight, so I'll just clean up the housing and bolt it back up.

I was happy I found this one, along with its matching 8.8 rear end because it already has the gear ratio that I want.

ok, the refresh of the 35 is complete. New bushings, bearings, seals, rotors, and pads.

Got the 28 pulled (first pic) , and the 35 all bolted up. Now for the 8.8 rear... Its going to get a refresh also, and converted to disk brakes while I'm at it.
