    Moral dilemma

Nobody wants to say it, but maybe you should consider a Duramax? I don't care for IFS either, but it's not like you're going to be wheeling the thing ;)

Rebuild the IDI, or swap in a Cummins

Ahh, you're right. They only have Powerstroke gaskets :( Well, looks like the best option would be to have the rod offset technique. It's relatively easy to do and gets the job done.

Pistons aren't the only way to drop the CR. On a 6.2/6.5, every .010" of deck clearance nets you about 1 point of CR reduction. The 6.9/7.3 should be similar. So, to go from 21.5:1 to 18:1, you need to either drop the piston crown .035", or raise the head by that amount. Obviously you could mill...

Rebuild the IDI, or swap in a Cummins

Rebuild the IDI, or swap in a Cummins

Yeah, they wanted the 6.5 to be OBD-II compliant, so they went to the DS4 and a PCM to control it. For .mil use the PCM and associated electronics would need to be meet certain criteria, and it was probably considered easier and cheaper to keep the DB2 and TH400...

Rebuild the IDI, or swap in a Cummins

All .mil 6.5's still use good ole DB2's. Unfortunately, running JP8 shortens their life, but they are still way better than the DS4's...
