    1965 Mercedes-Benz 190Dc Fintail Diesel Project

Shortly after that last post, the part arrived. I have been working out by Scottsbluff, Nebraska, so I hadn’t had time to work on the car, until today. Took a little more than an hour to replace the boot. Holds 2 1/2 quarts of oil in the axle, surprising to me, as it isn’t much bigger than the...

    Another questionable purchase

Interesting. Given the close deltas, I doubt that’s what’s going on. Injectors seem to be getting adequate flow, actual ICP tracks desired perfectly, always within 2 or 3 psi at least. IPR values are also good. A friend of mine showed me a kit that converts the 6.0 to external high pressure oil...

    Another questionable purchase

Yes. Unplugging the MAF sensor makes the turbo much more responsive, although it doesn’t increase power much… I did many tests this afternoon, can confirm the MAF sensor is faulty. The early 2003 calibrations are much more reliant upon the MAF than later models, or so I’ve read.

    Another questionable purchase

Drove the truck a couple hundred miles, after fresh fuel, oil, and all filters. I load tested the 6 year old batteries, they checked out good, which is surprising… I’m still going to replace them. Alternator output good Had Forscan hooked up for a good chunk of the drive, truck still felt a...

    Another questionable purchase

Alright, here’s the verdict. Seller told me prior to purchase that the truck has sat alot, pretty much his entire ownership. Well, further evidence shows that the truck has hardly been driven since February of 2020, and also has indications that the batteries, oil and all filters are that old...

    Another questionable purchase

Coolant filter and blue spring kit will be the first modifications, after changing all the filters (and an oil change), of course. If the oil cooler has high deltas, but everything else looks good, I’d be very tempted to throw the cash at the truck to spring for the Bulletproof Diesel air to...

    Another questionable purchase

My dad had an 04 F350, also a 6 speed 4WD crew cab, back when these trucks were new. The dealership installed a very hot chip onto it, and he had a lot of trouble. But he was kinda hard on it. I don’t like the 6.0 6 speed combination all that well, those transmissions are slow to shift, and...

    Another questionable purchase

It supposedly is completely stock. Stock exhaust and air filter system, nothing appears to be modified. I’m going to hook up Forscan and drive it, check FICM voltage, vane position, and EOT/ECT deltas. Make sure everything looks good. It was originally purchased by the government in Arkansas...

    1965 Mercedes-Benz 190Dc Fintail Diesel Project

I haven’t driven the car in a while, although I did start it the other day, and let it fully warm up. There is an axle boot next to the rear diff, that has split and leaks badly. I have been waiting for the boot to arrive, according to my service manual it’s a 30 minute job. I haven’t been...

    Another questionable purchase

I regret to inform you that I have purchased a 2003 Ford F450 XL Crew Cab 4WD, with a 10’ flatbed, a 6 speed manual, and a 6.0 Powerstroke, made in May of 03, one of the earliest 6.0s. It has 137,000 miles on it, and I purchased it on an internet auction, for much cheaper than I had been...

Motor mounts are in. I didn’t know this car could get smoother. I should replace the gearbox mounts, they are a little worse for wear, but not as bad as the engine mounts. The drivers side was beginning to separate, adding some high frequency vibrations at 45-55 MPH. Those are gone now.

    7.3idi swap

With 5.83s, 9.00-20 tires, and in direct drive gear, at 3300 RPM you would be doing almost 70 MPH With the same tires, also in direct gear, at 3300 RPM 7.95 - 50 MPH 6.40 - 63 MPH 8.72 - 46 MPH

    7.3 IDI Tachometer

I have seen one 84 with a tach. I haven’t seen many 83s in general, and none with a tach. Edited to add: I have never seen an 86 F-series diesel without a tach

New door seals on the way from Germany. Other odds and ends too… I have driven almost 1000 miles. It gets low 30s for fuel economy, but of course it is very slow. 60 mph seems to be the sweet spot, it can maintain speed up the shallower hills at that speed. Steep grades still slow it down. The...

    1965 Mercedes-Benz 190Dc Fintail Diesel Project

MB Classic Center and eBay have been my go-tos, there are other websites that specialize in such things, mercedessource has a decent selection for these old 60’s Benzs. Getting parts for it hasn’t been difficult, but it does require patience and the tariffs can get expensive… without the...

    1965 Mercedes-Benz 190Dc Fintail Diesel Project

New tires were installed last weekend, and I installed the new radiator yesterday. Runs even smoother down the road, and much cooler at a constant 180*. This car now starts, runs, drives and stops very well. Alternator belt has been squeaking after startup occasionally, it just needs...

So what did you do with your truck today?

I had been wondering about him a couple of weeks ago. He is usually on more often than that... I think he's somewhere between 80-82 in age, seemed like he said he was 80 not all that long ago. I hope he's doing okay... @ttman4, do you know him personally? If I recall correctly, you two don't...

    1965 Mercedes-Benz 190Dc Fintail Diesel Project

Well, I tackled the governor today. The original diaphragm was in many many pieces, cracks and chunks missing. Not a very simple system, but easy enough to work on. I got the new diaphragm installed and fired it up. Smoke was gone, but loped very badly and would die if you didn’t keep your...

    1965 Mercedes-Benz 190Dc Fintail Diesel Project

Worked on it most of the day, drove it down to the farm with that massive trunk filled with tools, parked it in a climate controlled shed. A good day to be in one of those, given the 60 mph north wind, and snow… yuck. Changed the cartridge fuel filter, and cleaned the screen fuel filter...

How bad is the HG job on a 7.3 IDI?

Haven’t had mine long enough to worry about that yet. I buy the poison they use in grain elevators to put in the corners of the sheds, and herb bags in vehicles and other places that I want them to stay out of.

How bad is the HG job on a 7.3 IDI?

Glad to have you back. Anyone heard from @Old Goat recently? Shows he hasn’t been on for one month, he was usually around more frequently than that.

    1965 Mercedes-Benz 190Dc Fintail Diesel Project

I ordered some parts… New glow plugs, as stated in my original post. New diaphragm for the injection pump governor. New glass for the drivers side mirror. New valve cover gasket, as I will need to adjust valve lash. New timing chain, in case the old one is out of spec. I don’t expect it to...

California trip anyone along the way in case?

I know this isn’t relevant to Austin’s trip, but it is relevant to fuel prices We got down to about three for a gallon of road diesel here in eastern Kansas, jumped up to four after we sent the Ayatollah to his Allah…
